Savoia di Lucania is a small italian village with a population of only 1,236 inhabitants. It is a municipality in the province of Potenza.
[edit] History
The original name of the village "Salvia" (it means "salvia")was changed in "Savoia" in reparation of the fact that a man, Giovanni Passannante who belonged to this little village, attempted on king Umberto I's life on 17th November 1878 during a visit in Naples. Recently has developed a movement, realized in the "pro-Salvia" committee, favourable to come back to the original name of Salvia by virtue of the basic conception that the rebel wanted, through his action, just to show his own indignation towards a ruling class employed to satisfy necessities of well-off people and completely disinterested to poorness which, especially after the birth of Italy, as a united country, was lacerating southern Italy. The "pro-Salvia" committee is opposed to the "pro-Savoia" one, which, instead of playing on real ideas, counts on the support of that part of population that adverses the hypothetical change of name, just for its own being conservative and, for this reason, contrary to every kind of change. The "pro-Savoia" committee is supported by the U.M.I. (Unione Monarchica Italiana), that is the Italian Monarchic Union, composed of those italian people, who are descendants of that ancient nobility which granted many privileges, obviously, deleted with the advent of Italian Republic, after the second world war. These people, in fact, exalt the real family of "savoia", just as an utopistic try to reach all the lost privileges.
