The pitcher gets a save opportunity when he has the chance to close out the game, and gain a save. The stat itself is useful for determining the efficiency of a closer in save situations. In baseball, a save opportunity (SVO) is when a relief pitcher enters a game, in which the pitcher meets the three requirements below.
- The pitcher is the last pitcher in a game won by his team;
- The pitcher is not in the position to be the winning pitcher
- The pitcher fulfills at least one of the following three conditions:
- He is in the position to come into the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitch at least one inning.
- He is in the position to come into the game with the potential tying run being either on base, at bat, or on deck.
- He is in the position to pitch for at least three innings after entering the game with a lead.
