[edit] Quizbowl

Savannah High School is home to one of Missouri's premier quizbowl teams, (and Ellen Bolger), having won six state championships. They have done very well on a national level at the ASCN national Tournament of Champions, placing 7th in 2003, 2004, 2005, placing 4th in 1995, and winning the championship in 1988. Their quizbowl team is also very popular in the local community. The quizbowl is composed of a JV team, and a Varsity team. The JV team won state in 2006 and 2007.[citation needed]

[edit] Debate and Forensics

Savannah High School is also home to one of the winningest Speech and Debate squads in the Midland Empire Conference and greater Kansas City area, winning every conference championship since its inception (11), and qualifying numerous competitors to the Missouri State High School Activities Association Tournament and National Forensic League Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2008. While the SHS team is one of the smallest in the Heart of America District, it boasts the greatest capacity of success per person.[citation needed]

In recent years, Savannah has placed well at the state and national tournament level:

  • 2001: A 2nd place MSHSAA State Tournament Humorous Interpretation, 2nd place NFL Nationals Video Speaking Contest;
  • 2002: A 6th place MSHSAA State Tournament Dramatic Interpretation, a State Champion Extemporaneous Speaking;

At MSHSAA State, Savannah placed in more events than any other school in the state. These placings include: 2nd place DI, 2nd place HI, 2nd place Storytelling, 3rd place Oratory, 3rd place Extemp, 6th place Poetry, Quarterfinalists Public Forum team, and Semifinalist Lincoln Douglas debater.

[edit] Criticism of Mascot

The Savannah Savages have been criticized as having a mascot that is offensive towards Native Americans. Several campaigns have been started to change the mascot, but these campaigns have been met with opposition. The supporters of the mascot stand in firm affirmation of the mascot in a united cry of "Savage Pride."

[edit] Savannah Soccer Team

Savannah High School began girl's and boy's soccer teams in 2005. In the 2006 season the boy's team won their first game.
