Savannah Gas Company Globe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Savannah Gas Company Globe is a spherical structure in Savannah, Georgia. It is located at 14 East 73rd Street, nearby the intersection of White Bluff Road and DeRenne Avenue.
[edit] Description
The Globe was constructed between 1956 and 1957 and was first used as a storage tank by the Savannah Gas Company. Its diameter is 60 feet. [1] About two years after its completion, it was re-painted with the colors a world map to ressemble the Earth.
The structure was re-painted in 1998 with more realistic colors which included Hurricane Floyd heading towards Savannah. However, the storm was erronously depicted clockwise and therefore had to be corrected.
In 2005, the Globe was purchased by the Savannah Mortgage Company, whose offices are located next door.
The property's mailbox consists of a much smaller sphere, which is a representation of the Moon. [2]
