Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies/to do full list

Hi Satyr, Looking at the revision history for Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies/to do full list, I see you (or your bot) is the main editor. (at least recently). I was wondering, is it something you update based on maintenance tags or something? Or can one just manually add any article to it that needs work? I don't really understand these things & don't want to mess it up for the bot, but it'd be nice to have some things on the list as it's empty at the moment. Cheers, --BelovedFreak 22:32, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Hon! The bot *used* to update that nightly. I'm in the middle of a major re-write of the bot's functions, so it hasn't been done in the past couple weeks. Until the bot gets going again, feel free to update at will! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 04:11, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, will do! --BelovedFreak 18:26, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Request: Re C C Saint Clair Page

Hi, I am very keen to sort out the wikipedia page for C C Saint Clair, I noticed on the history that you were involved in tagging it as in need of editting - would it be possible for you to suggest what needs adding/changing in order for this page to up to standard. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Auntie Lil (talkcontribs) 10:32, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Sisters Halloween?

Hi, you completely erased over a decade of history which is relevant to the history of this group and the notability in SF, a mistake? Benjiboi 07:24, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I assume you mean [1]? The information I deleted was mostly about San Fran and the earthquake, and then a bunch of info that was highly WP:POV - "enabling the Sisters to add structure to the chaos", "A decade later the City of San Francisco is still struggling to manage any Halloween event", etc. I tried to keep the key points about our involvement in organizing and running the event(s) and the pertinent references. Sorry if I took too much out, but I kept running into POV statements and things that weren't directly related to our Sistory... -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 07:58, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
Wanted to see where you were coming from, will look to re-adding material in more NPOV way. This was arguably a critical chapter in the Sisters' rise to national prominence beyond just local fame. I believe all those points are absolutely true but POV should be mitigated as appropriate. Benjiboi 13:46, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Help!!!

Can you help me get a copyright tag on this picture or do something so it won't erase, I'm new to editing and uploading pictures on wikipedia. The picture comes of the bio section for Greg Patillo at this site: http://whatisproject.org/Projectsamplebio.htm

or if there is nothing you can do, can you direct me to a place where I can learn about uploading pictures and the restrictions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Luisvmejia (talkcontribs) 23:25, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

List of Ipswich Town F.C. players FLC

Hey SatyrTN, thanks for your conditional support and comments at the above, I really appreciate you taking the time out to contribute to this usually WP:FOOTBALL dominated theme. There's been a bit of discussion about your comment so I thought I'd let you know that you should pop back when you get a moment and, as they say here in blighty, read all about it...!. Cheers. Question

Why does the LGBT project feel it is necessary to tag every single episode and character with slight LGBT themes? It seems kind of silly, because how can an episode like "Homer's Phobia" (which was tagged three days after it became an GA) have any kind of importance to the overall topic? That's like The Simpsons WP tagging every single TV show that has ever parodied The Simpsons or every single guest star. Besides, the LGBT project has done absolutely nothing to help clean up or maintain the articles. I can understand why Homer's Phobia was tagged (because the project wants to add an article to the accomplishments section, even though none of the members had anything to with getting it promoted) but why is Waylon Smithers so important? It's quite obvious that you haven't even looked at the article, because its far from being B class. -- Scorpion0422 23:12, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Fair enough I guess. Smithers is my random character clean up project of the month so I'm going to be cleaning up the article and possibly taking a stab at GA status, so I don't suppose you or anyone in the LGBT project would be willing to help? -- Scorpion0422 01:50, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

{{LGBT}}

Hi Satyr, I'm confused by your having restored Intersexuality to the scope of the LGBT Wikiproject [2] - I thought previous discussions had concluded that the topic should not be included? I've asked about it at WT:LGBT. WjBscribe 17:06, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

No clue why I did that. :) I've reverted it. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 17:30, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

FLC

I have List of George Cross recipients list in mind for eventual FL candidacy. The central problem is that there are a very large number of redlinks - although I'm fairly sure of notability, at least for the direct awards - less so for the 1200 awarded medals that could later be exchanged for the GC, although admittedly only ~100 were alive and exchanged medals. The secondary problem is that the list only includes those directly awarded the GC, and not those who exchange their previous gallantry awards for it. Will either of these be a problem? (Sorry to pick on you - I noticed you commenting on some nominations on the FLC page) Thanks, RHB - Talk 21:25, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

A well meaning admin has deleted this image because he thought there might possibly be a chance that one day in Savage's lifetime he might possibly take it upon himself to perhaps question the propriety of somebody uploading this meme to Wikipedia. Can you perhaps make a new one, with a rainbow logo? There is no copyright attached to letters of the alphabet, so it would be solidly free content. In fact, Savage even suggests people do just that on his website. I made my own, but it's crude and only a half-assed solution. Think you can do better? Jeffpw 08:43, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Illinois Project

Classification

I want to again thank you for tagging all of our Illinois pages with the Illinois tag. I was wondering now though, if you would be able to use your bot to start tagging importance? I think we will just make it easy, and tag most everything Low until we can get around to evaluating the important articles. Let me know what you think of this. Thanks!--Kranar drogin 01:07, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Kranar! To clarify, should the bot check all {{WikiProject Illinois}} banners and, if there's no importance already specified, add "importance=low"? -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 02:24, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I would like the bot to check all articles and to add them to articles that do not have an importance already added. Are you going to check all articles with that template, or will you have the bot check our category like last time with all the categories? Category:Category-Class WikiProject Illinois articles was the one. It doesn't matter to me I guess what you do, but just to go back over. So I can make sure I am clear what I want (since sometimes I am not a very clear typer). Go ahead and add "importance=Low" to all {{WikiProject Illinois}}, and if you would just because I can be anal, capitalize the "L" in Low and if its not too hard, can you put it after the class? That second request isn't a big deal if you can't do it. Thanks so much for your hard work in this! I will have a second request once this is completed, to see if you are going to be able to do it. Thanks!--Kranar drogin 02:44, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

I hope you get this before you get going too far with the tagging. There is a couple things I would like to change. First off:

Sorry on this, I was just looking over things last night and forgot to message you. Hope you can do these, otherwise can always come back to it. Thanks!--Kranar drogin 23:05, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Kranar! I had a setback on Friday in my coding, but I should be able to get to this in the next day (or three). I'll run those categories first, then the low importances. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 17:54, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Hey, awesome! thanks so much for your help.--Kranar drogin 22:57, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Just was wondering if your next attempt was more successful? I know you said you had some problems and was going to try again, but didn't know if you did so on pages I don't watch.--Kranar drogin 02:18, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks so very much! I might need your assistance with another project coming up if you are interested. I need to put geoboxes on all the city, village, etc articles such as Stillman Valley, Illinois as a village and Byron, Illinois as a city. If you feel up to it, let me know.--Kranar drogin 22:30, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

SatyrBot and project tags

I noticed earlier that SatyrBot has been putting importance tags on deleted talk pages, such as Talk:Gonac. I figured I'd let you know in case there's something that can be done about that - you might also want to check its contribs to see if it's created new talk pages for deleted or nonexistent articles whenever it tags things. --Coredesat 02:02, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Looks like the article Gonac was deleted after the bot retrieved it's list of articles to process. I've done a review of a couple thousand of it's edits and don't see another instance of that happening, so I think it was a run-of-the-mill glitch and not something I can expect to happen. Thanks for checking! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 02:10, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Actually there are many that were created. See Category:Unassessed WikiProject Illinois articles to see what I am talking about. No biggie, just for you to be aware of.--Kranar drogin 02:25, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Eek. Actually, that is a biggie. I'll have to see why the article names are messing up like that and adding the "?". Grumble :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 02:27, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
The bot may not recognize apostrophes for some reason. I'll G8 those when I get the chance, unless another admin beats me to it. --Coredesat 05:22, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks - I think I've found the error that caused all those and am in the process of debugging it. Many thanks for your help!!!! Sorry for the errors :( -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 05:30, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Bot almost working

I see you have the bot up and running. It seems that there is some sort of logic problem for a multiline layout of the {{ChicagoWikiProject}}. See the following edit.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:40, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Tony - I've fixed that error in the code. Thanks for catching it and bringing it to my attention! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 15:22, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Is your question about before or after this fix? It seems like you are going back to before the problem I reported. It seems to have stopped double tagging. It does not seem to have run since the fix for multiline layout. I know of no other problems.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 22:41, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

This edit October 27 by SatyrBot seems to be a similar problem. If it was a bug (and bug now fixed), are you also planning to fix those "old" edits? Oceanh 21:46, 2 November 2007 (UTC).

Indexing talk pages: is it possible?

Hi from the Opera Project! At the moment I'm trying to make our 43 archives more accessible. I've been wondering if there is a way of indexing them based on the TOCs. Do you know if any other project is doing this? Best. -- Kleinzach 01:34, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Sarah Silverman

What on earth does she have to do with LBTG "studies?" I would like to revert this edit[4], but perhaps you'd care to explain yourself first. Is it because she does a lot of gay jokes; what comedian doesn't make fun of gay people? Or is it because your original research tells you gay people like her? Link question

What's your concern about the link to the overview page concerning Wikipedian philosophies? - jc37 12:15, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Mostly my concern was that "dar" and "incl" had both been changed to "Phil". Perhaps the boxes could be changed to say "This editor holds an inclusionist philosophy."?
So it's more to do with listing one of those as the abbreviation? or is it that it's blue instead of black? - jc37 14:21, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
Nope - just the abbreviation. I have Incl and Dar on mine, so having "Phil" and "Phil" doesn't make much sense :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 16:22, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
But having incl and inclusionist does? : )
How about we look to see if there is another appropriate image or abbreviation for these than just an arbitrary truncation? - jc37 16:31, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
What's wrong with an arbitrary abbreviation? But I'll take a look and see if I see anything that screams "Inclusionist", "Darwinist" and "Deletionist". Come to look at it, meta:Conflicting Wikipedia philosophies doesn't even include Darwinism. Or even Deletionism or Inclusionism! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 01:54, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Removing WikiProject banners

The original placement of the banner was dubious at best. This isn't a character whose gender identity differed from the body in which they were born; this is a supervillain whose brain was placed in the body of a woman for nefarious purposes. The very notion of including this under a LGBT banner makes a mockery of real life issues pertaining to transgender. --Plangent 08:10, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

As I understand it, the person who originally placed the tag was dubious about doing so. But if you or people from the project can guarantee me that some editors are going to want work on the article from the POV of how transgender issues are covered in comics (for example), then I will not remove the banner if it is replaced again. But to be honest, come the day that the seminal work on transgenderism in popular fiction is written, my feeling is that a character whose key defining attribute is transplanting his brain into different vessels in order to further his villainous schemes would only merit a brief mention. Featured List of the Day Experiment

I am contacting individuals in the order of the number of featured lists that they had created by Novemeber 10, 2007. You have created several. So you are among the first. There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:11, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Re: Reliable Source

As far as I'm concerned, it's reliable. It seems to be a pretty serious article written for New Grove II, the second edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the publication as a whole seems to be considered reliable. The article cites its own sources, and as for the single passing name-mentions, IMO they're just summarizing [to quote in (eg.) Charles Wuorinen's case] "how very considerable the homosexual presence has been in 20th century Western music..." Thoughts? •97198 talk 07:06, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

We could cite the book, but as you said we (a) don't actually have the book and (b) can't be sure whether it has its facts straight. As with Wuorinen, if there are no supporting sources available and NNDB list his sexual orientation as straight - not that NNDB is completely reliable - maybe we should remove him. Maybe we should just take the people listed as "suggestions" - try to find other supporting (reliable) sources and de-list everyone without another source? •97198 talk 23:44, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Small world...

Remeber yesterday when you left me a comment on my talk page? Well today I came across something I wanted to edit the Chris Crocker page but couldn't because of an edit dispute, and you are one of the people listed as commenting on it. :-) Wikipedia community feels really small today. :-) ZacBowlingtalk 23:07, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the biggest number of edits have been done anonymously because of fear of conflicts of interest with my employers since I'm in the public eye there and they would probably wouldn't want to be associated with some of the topics I edit here. :-) ZacBowlingtalk 23:41, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Violence against LGBT people

Just in time to improve the holiday spirit for the LGBT community. I just added this: Gay bashing increased to 16% in 2006, from 14% in 2005. See: The FBI crime report for 2006 that just came out last week in Violence against LGBT people. But the reason for this comment is that the whole article seems to need additional sourcing, although it's not tagged. Where do I place such an article that doesn't appear to have quite the right category in our TO-DO list, since it's has some citations, rather than none. If it was just a few, I would add them myself, but it looks like a lot of work is needed and will take too much time for one person. Or am I wrong? And should this comment have been posted on the project talk page? Still feeling my way around in the dark. :-) Comments and suggestions always welcome, BTW. Happy belated Thanksgiving. — Becksguy (talk) 03:51, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

How about {{refimprove}} or {{refimprovesect}}? --Orange Mike | Talk 03:54, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
Just what I was going to suggest, Orangemike! SatyrBot reviews all articles with our banner on them and creates the "to do list" from there, so if you add {{unreferenced}}, {{refimprove}}, {{unreferenced-sect}}, or {{refimprovesect}}, the article will show up on our list. Take a look at WP:TC for an idea of what templates say what.

SatyrBot idea

I just stumbled across User:SatyrBot/WikiProject to do lists, and it would be helpful to be able to add redirects and deleted articles to your list. I've run across a few instances where an article is deleted and merged/redirected, but the WikiProject banner remains on the talk page, falsely adding one to the Stub-Class count. It would be useful to have the ability to quickly identify such pages so the banners can be removed. Pagrashtak 20:09, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

The boxes are not rendering properly, for example, the dot for McCullom Lake, Illinois is not located in Illinois at all. RyanGerbil10(Говорить!) 22:06, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

I will echo the sentiment Brooklyn, Illinois is about 30 miles south of where it should be. I have used the geoboxes on other states and they are pretty accurate. I suspect the base map is not calibrated correctly. Americasroof (talk) 22:22, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

In the for what it's worth department, I replaced "Illinois - outline map.svg" and "Illinois - background map.png" with the standard Illinois Locator Map.PNG and it works fine. I quite frankly that the .svg and background map looked sorta ugly and not the usual pretty wikipedia official pastels. And for good measure, I'm not entirely certain why there's a geobox crawling some locations and an infobox settlement crawling others. Thanks again. Americasroof (talk) 23:11, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Because everything is still in the works, we are in the process of changing stuff over if you would have just been patient. Anyways, Satyr, Dual responded to your question on the Illinois Project. Templates as content

That is actually a rather recent addition (November 14) that doesn't seem to have really been discussed anywhere. I have removed it for the time being, if only so it can be properly discussed. Circeus (talk) 21:00, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

While it does remove the necessity for an actual template, the transclusion is still present and give that this form is rarer than template, this scheme is likely to be more confusing to those that never saw it (which is why, although I knew about it, I did not suggest that technique). Also, slashes do not create subpages in articlespace: "List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people/lede" is an article just like "List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people: Sa-Sc" is! You could possibly try transcluding List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people itself, with the help of <noinclude> and <onlyinclude>, but that is still pretty much the same can of worm. Circeus (talk) 21:53, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
In short, the only thing it changes is transcluding from Articlespace instead of the template namespace. All other problems are still present, and new ones show up. Circeus (talk) 16:56, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
Actually transclusion of content form mainspace is a) confusing to new and old editors alike, b) an arcane aspect of wikitext, c) addition of extra, unnecessary barriers to editing. It is also easier to break several pages by poor/accidental edition of the inclusion tags in the main list.
The main reason templates are used are either because the wikitext is overly long for the visible result (cf. the national sports team template, and the flag or language icons) or contains a lot of complex wikicode (cf. navigational templates and infoboxes), and content templates do not help with either of these aspects, in addition to creating a host of new concerns. Circeus (talk) 20:56, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
How about we copy this (appropriately reformatted) discussion to a Wikipedia:Centralized discussion and post requests for input in appropriate places? Circeus (talk) 21:19, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Anywhere there's a list in an article longer than, say, 10 lines, I find columns makes the article more compact and removes the "white space" from the right-hand side. It's not necessary (or recommended for or against, as far as I know), but I like it :) Feel free to remove if you want - no problem. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 22:42, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Charles Wuorinen

I happened to see your query on Choess's talk, I have access to the online Grove, and there doesn't seem to be anything in there that's relevant. It's not impossible that the hard-copy contains additional material however. David Underdown (talk) 10:54, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi, David - thanks for your help! The reason I asked about it is because he's listed in this article, which purports to be "[t]he unexpurgated full-length original of the New Grove II article, edited by Carlos Palombini". He's just listed in passing as a "gay musician", but I've been unable to find anything to corroborate that. I was hoping there was something in the New Grove like a full chapter on "LGBT Music" or maybe something in Wuorinen's bio about his partner. Thanks for your help! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 15:07, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
From a very quick look at the content, it seems entirely probable that the article you mention above is indeed the original/full-length one. I simply searched for the first occurence of Wuorinen in that, and found the equivalent passage in the Grove article, which reads," It will be objected that in many cases a ‘straight’ equivalent may be found. But a list of this kind, which could easily be expanded, shows not only how very considerable the homosexual presence has been in 20th-century Western music but also prompts questions as to how and why, in the post-Freudian age, a basic element of subjectivity could have been so little examined in relation to music, or why that relation should have been so obsessively denied." As you will be able to see, the wording is basically identical, but the "expanded list" itself is not given.
I've now done a full-text search of Grove for "Wuorinen", and they doesn't seem to be a mention of a partner anywhere. David Underdown 16:01, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

It was speedy. It's a play on words, which in English would be something like Come and play with my d***, big daddy. I didn't see it before because I didn't know the second name used was Carmelo, but honestly, once someone pointed it out, it was beyond obvious. Benito Carmelo Papazón -> Ven y tócamelo [el pene], Papazón. Any admin with a grasp of Spanish will get it. Plus we couldn't get a single ref which connected that name with the Dance of the 41.
