Request for WP:VIET
Hi Satyr. I have lodged a request for your bot to do some Vietnam category tagging. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:36, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- I've replied to your Questions. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:20, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, I hope the bot is feeling healthier soon. It appeared to misfire? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:23, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. The rest of the cats are coming in due time I hope :). Blnguyen (bananabucket) 23:21, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Doh! Yes - I'll set those up to run tonight! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 23:23, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
I had a couple questions on categories for the bot to run through. Please remember, though, that my knowledge of all things Vietnamese comes solely from the TV, so if I seem ignorant, it's because I am :)
Are at least 80% of the articles in the following categories ones that "belong" to WP:VIETNAM?
- Category:Indochina Wars
- Category:Indochina Wars
- Category:Islands of the South China Sea
- Category:Japanese war crimes
- Category:Naval battles of the Sino-French War
- Category:Paris by Night singers
- Category:People of the First Indochina War
- Category:Second Indochina War
- Category:Sino-French War
- Category:Tai history
- Category:Tai peoples
- Category:Third Indochina War
- Category:Unified Buddhist Church Buddhists
Thanks! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 23:35, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, thanks for pointing that out. Some of them I wasn't looking carefully enough. Category:Islands of the South China Sea, Category:Japanese war crimes, Category:Naval battles of the Sino-French War, Category:Tai history, Category:Tai peoples need to go. I'll comment them out on the cat list. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 23:42, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Ping just in case you didn't pick up this reply. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 23:30, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

- Um. Oops? Doh! And other nonsense words that mean "I forgot!" -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 03:23, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
- Another thing, can you re-scan Category:Vietnam geography stubs - because I have just created about 200 new ones in the last two days and it would be nice if the bot could add {{WPVN|class=stub}} to them. Saves me time from making 200 new talk pages.....currently making a stub for each of the 663 Districts of Vietnam ... Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:26, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

- Yeah, quicker to do the 663 rescans later. But the remaining 80 odd cats can be tagged soon I hope :) Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:33, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi there again. I created about 650 odd stubs for all the Districts in Vietnam and they are all tagged {{Vietnam-geo-stub}} under Category:Vietnam geography stubs. Could you fire up and bot-sweep on that cat and tag all of them with {{WPVN|class=stub}}? Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 00:13, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks heaps. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:46, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

i was shocked to see you aren't just any homophobe, but the self-hating kind. wiki is not the place for agendas, please stop deleting queer visibility. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.162.169.234 (talk) 12:42, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry - exactly *where* did that comment come from?
- First, if you mean this and this, my reason for removing the category is because her being a lesbian is only hinted at in the article, and doesn't have a reference.
- Second, calling me homophobic is laughable. Calling me self-hating is ridiculous. And doing either constitutes a personal attack, which is against Wikipedia policy. Please consider being more civil? Thanks! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:30, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Katharine McMahon
Hi. I wonder if I could ask why you've deleted my article on the author, Katharine McMahon? It says "Katharine McMahon" (CSD G12: Blatant copyright infringement www.katharinemcmahon.com/katharine_mcmahon_website_005.htm) But I wrote/created the web site, it is all my own work. I wonder if you can tell me what proof you would like me to provide to show you that I am the author of katharinemcmahon.com? You could go to the site and email me? I'm a bit disappointed as I read all the notes very carefully and I've still messed up....
To quote Wiki "If you prosecute and judge people because they are ignorant of our policies and guidelines, you are in fact violating our policies and guidelines!" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Don%27t_bite_the_newbies#Ignorantia_juris_may_excuse . --Belinda Roussel (talk) 13:13, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, Belinda! I'm sorry you feel I was persecuting you or something - I did not mean to do that.
- Whether or not you created "KatharineMcMahon.com" is not really the point. The point is fairly obscure - WP:CP has the specific information - but the overview is that copying text from another site onto Wikipedia is frowned upon, specifically for copyright reasons. If you would like to use that text anyway, WP:CP gives you information on how to do that. Or you can re-write the info and put it on Wikipedia. In all honesty, I would recommend the latter course of action. The text you have on your website is beautiful, flattering, and highly complimentary, but very unlike an encyclopedia entry :) Perhaps you could review some of the articles listed in Category:British writers for how other entries are written?
- And again - I'm sorry if you feel I was in any way harassing you. If I can help with anything else, please let me know. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:40, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the information - so helpful. I understand now. I don't really feel persecuted:-) It's just that I read and made notes on every page of information on Wikipedia I could find (no mean feat) and then created my first Wiki article. Had four hours sleep and woke to find my article had been deleted! Such is life. I'm going to have another go and not be so lazy - I should have understood the encyclopedia-style requirement. I'll have a good look at British writers and attempt a re-write. Thanks again.--Belinda Roussel (talk) 16:29, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Shady on bot question
Howdy, I wasn't sure what you meant by "What I don't like is the slightly shady way this situation a) got started (Dreamafter), and b) continues (JackSchmidt)." I certainly am not trying to do anything shady. Was the discussion closed when I posted? I am new to posting on brfa, so I hope I didn't post out of turn.
Blofeld's new pages are basically disruptive to my new page patrolling. I strongly support anyone's idea of how to get them to stop being disruptive. Saying "make the old ones not stubs before making new stubs" is fine by me, but I believe that has been tried. Marking his new pages as bot flagged, or marking them patrolled automatically, or something like that sounds fine to me. Since no one was doing that and I don't like complaining for someone else to make my viewing experience pleasurable, I wrote some javascript that anyone could write or install in their user account which hides any <li> with a link to Blofeld's user page on any page named "Special:Newpages". I think currently my wife and I are the only ones using it, but others are welcome to it.
At any rate, I definitely don't want to be shady, so let me know what I *am* doing to inadvertently be shady. JackSchmidt (talk) 21:52, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Suggestions to avoid re-deletion?
Hi, I recently wrote an article entitled Johns Hopkins Mental Notes. Why was this tagged for deletion? I understand the section that was cited:
7. An article about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. This is distinct from questions of notability, verifiability and reliability of sources.
My question is what made my article different from any of the other ones describing collegiate a cappella groups, such as these? Examples:
Binghamton Crosbys
Katzenjammers
Penny Loafers
Radcliffe Pitches
Some of these don't even have citations or substantial links, and a few go on to list current and past members, which seems a bit like advertising to me. All of the articles discuss the different histories, styles, and places within their respective universities for each group, as well as list discography (some don't even do this, which seems like the most relevant thing to somebody looking at the List of collegiate a cappella groups, which seems to legitimize the existence of such articles .
What suggestions can you make to avoid having the article re-deleted? Thanks, pelo247 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pelo247 (talk • contribs) 23:21, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

A wiki with a sense of humor. I was wondering if I could find any on this site. I had already located one, but I knew more existed. Also, I see you've been vandalized 8 times. Considering how many edits you've made, that's not bad. I've been on this site for 3 weeks and I've already been vandalized 4 times...that's not good.--AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 03:47, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
- ROTFL! It depends on the editing you're doing. AllStarEcho, for example, likes to do vandalism patrol. That puts hir in the line of fire quite often. Me, I stick to the categorization and background stuff. Though now I'm an admin, so I've been deleting articles on occasion - that'll get you noticed by the noobs that have nothing to do :)
- As for sense of humor, why did you make me watch that fat man dancing? Twice? Why?

- Well, I was experimenting with being a recent change patroller and warned quite a few people about vandalizing...maybe I asked for it. The fat man dancing was priceless...you should see the video I posted on the 30th. (type "fat man dancing" in a youtube search and the video on top is the one). - On a different note, is there a way to create some kind of info box showing # of hotels, corporate info, etc. of the Kimpton Hotel company? [1] has some information that I think might be helpful, but I don't know how to make a box for it. Kinda hard to describe what I mean, but something that could attach to the bottom of the corporate logo on the article with the info.--AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 06:52, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Jon Schillaci
The reason for me to add him in that category, is because I think he fits there.
This news source says something about his sexual orientation. "According to a 1989 Houston Chronicle article, the then 17-year-old Schillaci and a 20-year-old man were accused of having sex with two boys they allegedly featured in a video. He pleaded guilty to two counts of sex performed by a child and four of aggravated sexual assault, according to Larry Fitzgerald, spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice."
Not the kind of thing a straight guy would do, so he is homosexual, or at least bisexual. My bad I didn't citate that, I'm going to expand these 'FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives'-articles and citate some sources later.
Reverend X (talk) 14:53, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I knew then and I still know that pedophilia is totally different than homosexuality. That's correct.
- Being a pedophile doesn't make him gay. That correct, too. But what does make him gay or bisexual is committing an offense like "aggravated sexual assault" against another boy. Didn't you notice the part of the news that says his victim was male?
- Are you trying to say that there is a possibility that a pedophile who has had homosexual sex with a boy could be heterosexual?
- Reverend X (talk) 16:02, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
-
- All right, big thank you for clearing up this pedophilia-thing for me. I still think that the gender of prey matters to most of child sexual offenders, though, but I will not add the LGBT category in any articles unless I find more reliable source(s) to confirm one's sexual orientation. Keep up the good work!

Pictures
The Navy Yard/Near Southeast article I've been working on now has 'speedy deletion' tags on the two pictures at the bottom of the page. The woman who took those pictures gave me permission through an e-mail to use them as long as I gave her credit. I'm still trying to figure out the image policies, so do you know what I have to do in order to keep the pictures on there? I asked an admin that works on the D.C. subway articles, but he hasn't responded yet. I think he might be homophobic, like some other people I know. (see:[2]) :P Muchas gracias mi amigo. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 23:01, 5 February 2008 (UTC) p.s. I'm joking of course about the admin being a homophobe...I just had to come up with an excuse to throw in the homophobe edit.
- You saw that on my user page, didn't you :)
- I don't know a whole lot about pictures. I know you need to label them with the right copyright status. You also need to send the creator one of the "approved" emails (see WP:COPYREQ), and she needs to reply (or you need to send the reply) to the OTRS system.
- Sorry I can't be more help, but it's not an area I understand. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 02:05, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
FotoFest deletion
Dear sir - I am a bit dismayed to see that you have deleted my article on FotoFest in Houston, TX. While I am an avid fan of this place - a daily reader that spends upwards of 3 hours per day online, I have not edited or created much yet. In fact the FotoFest article was my first. I am new and I may be making mistakes. I do want to correct them.
I appreciate what you and all of the other monitors do - in fact I applaud you for keeping Wikipedia the reliable and fun place that I have grown to love. That being said, I am incredibly disheartened that the things of which I know the most about and wish to include are so readily and summarilly deleted.
I worked very hard to establish the relevence of FotoFest. I do not think I was overly strenuous in calling it what it is almost universally, (in the photographic art world), considered - a leader and pioneer. If it sounds like an ad I ask to what end? FotoFest is a 501c3 non-profit. The organization does not sell art, they do not charge fees to artists in their exhibits and all exhibits are free and open to the public.
In Houston it is considered a leader in the arts and has been recognized city-wide, state-wide and nationally for its programs. What more does it need? I fully intend to request that the page be restored and should that request be denied I plan to rewrite it. I am asking you, on behalf of the community of administrators and the wider reading public, what can I do to keep what I create in the document?
Thank you for you kind attention, Vinodoscope (talk) 00:12, 6 February 2008 (UTC)Vinodoscope

Bot to generate list from category
I'm working on a cat list for your new pages bot but, going through all the subcats is very tedious. CatScan appears to be down but used to do this very well. Do you know of another easier way to do this? My current list is up here. The opening paragraph has the categories I need as well as the two subcats I need removed from one. Any help would be appreciated.↔NMajdan•talk 19:30, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I don't know an easy way. What I ended up doing is starting with:
- Then I went down through the list and hit the "+" or "-" until I felt good that I was over-inclusive, but hadn't missed much (if anything) that belonged. Finally, I simply click-drag selected all of them and copy-pasted them into a text document. Not elegant in the least, but it did the trick. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 01:02, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Instead of surfing around the wikipedia world leaving little notes (most of them cryptic) about what needs to be changed in entries, how about doing some of the work! I'm talking about the "convert your prose into a list" on he USAA entry. I attempted to make it a list, used little stars to make it an ordered list, and you just came along and put the crappy little notice back in the entry instead of making the list correct. Are you on a power trip or something? This wiki world has enough editors and format police - DO THE WORK if it doesn't require research. Hillcountrygrump (talk) 13:33, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

NICE WORK. NICE WORK. NICE WORK. I have disliked the article for almost 3 years (way too much conjecture, poor flow, redundant) and I tried to do something similar (though not as well as you) multiple times but got shot down because I admitted to being a USAA employee (therefore I was automatically biased according to several people and was removing content that made the article "interesting"). Thank you for your work. By the way, you went from being a mere sniper (this is wrong, that is wrong, blah blah blah) to a very powerful leader by making the edits!! Well done. Hill Country Grump! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.155.4.175 (talk) 16:31, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- My reason for sniping is that I know absolutely nothing about USAA, so I can point to what needs cleanup, expansion, etc, but I don't know the content. - Here's how:
- Add this to top of the AfD: {{at}} closed with consensus to redirect to [[List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people]]. — ~~~~
- and this to botton of the AfD: {{ab}}
- Remove the AFD tag from top of the AfD, and preview the closed discussion (measure twice, cut once). Then remove the AfD tag from article, and redirect it. (Or chose your own closing rationale.) I actually did it that way after much research and it worked fine.
- Except you really shouldn't close it, as you participated (I think that applies to admins also). — Becksguy (talk) 22:46, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Not every clever new concept and interesting project is notable; most of them are bound for the dustbin of history. I would advise a robotics project to switch to improving the existing articles, and not creating all these articles about products that have not even been released. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Orangemike (talk • contribs) 13:58, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I didn't know you were in NC? I used to spend many weekends in Carolina Beach at my best friend's condo. Temporary userpage?
Just curious about the use of the {{temporary userpage}} template when applying spam notices? As in: [3].
Is that template transcluded in the tag you're using? Should it be there? Thanks for clarifying
- No, it's not. It's something I throw in for accounts which will never (because they're blocked) or are extremely unlikely to (because of their contribution histories) actually edit, especially for usernames with are spammy in themselves (like User:Carboncopypro) -- and no-follow tags or not, non-blank pages get picked up by Google. The latter of the two types is, admittedly, a judgment call, but if they're really going to contribute, they can, like the tag text says, simply remove it: I add them immediately because otherwise I'd have to come back months later and check.
- As for the tags themselves, I simply use a text file with the tag text: I copy the text, paste it in, and fill in the blanks as appropriate:
-
- {{subst:spam-warn-userpage|User:XXX|header=1}} ~~~~ <--- Warning message, with "XXX" replaced by username
-
- {{spam-warn-userpage}} - [[User:XXX]] <--Edit summary text, with "XXX" replaced by username, cut and pasted into edit summary field
-
- {{temporary userpage}} <--Temporary userpage tag itsownself
- I tend to focus on this particular task because, frankly, I've semi-automated it this way and therefore is easy to do and doesn't take a whole lot of time. Hope that helps. --Calton | Talk 14:19, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Bot ideas
You might also want to advertise Satyrbot's services on some of the big Country projects like France and *Spain - they could use all the help you can give them, and with their strong relationship with foreign wikis they tend to have translation problems in particular. Also, anything you can do to help with the assessment of Unassessed articles in Country Projects such as those would be appreciated, even if it was just a one-off run assessing all the Category:Italy_stubs (etc) as class=stub. Actually, it would be good if you could do the Italy stubs first, as I've got some plans for the rest.;-/
Just as a general comment, IME the Companies Project has perhaps the most articles not tagged with the project, if you're looking for a job there's lots of work to be done there. I've been talking a bit with User:Reedy_Boy about this kind of thing, he might be able to help out.FlagSteward (talk) 14:02, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, FlagSteward - sorry to see your previewing skills are at zero today - I've had similar days and they're quite frustrating! LOL :)
- In any case - can we be a bit more specific here? "The country projects" includes a whole 1.73 tons of articles, so trying to attack them all would probably be too much :) Are there one or two WikiProjects that specifically want help? I don't like to go in and just do a task without the WP's requesting it - too many toes stepped on, in my experience. But if you've discussed this with a particular project, I'll be glad to help!
- And I just ran WP:CFB with a very similar project - reviewing all unassessed articles and tagging them when appropriate, including "averaging" ratings if different projects have rated differently.
- Also, your suggestion at the BotRFA page is ultimately easy. I can run a report like that for any WikiProject you choose - and may even be able to set it up so any user can run it whenever they want on whatever project they want. Let me think about that and see what I can come up with. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:23, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I was coming at it from the POV of the Italy Project, where I've been trying to stir up some activity by doing 1000-odd assessments (and getting the completely Unassesseds is a reasonable goal). But via the Wine Project which is my 'home' project I get to see quite a lot of some of the country Projects, particularly France and Spain - and unlike your run-in with WP:CFB they're at a much earlier stage, where they've still got 1000's of articles still to asssess and won't notice more coming in. ;-/ Mebbe the way to do it is to start with the {{stub}}-to-class=Stub thing, and then expand into the adding new articles thing that some people find more controversial. I must admit that personally I think it's much more important to get articles within Projects for further handling by specialists than worrying about the downside, particularly the Projects that are relatively undeveloped - again the Companies Project is a good example. I was thinking it might be better if you go and advertise your services as you know exactly what you can and can't do, but I'm happy to mention it on the Spain and France projects.
- But in general, there's tons of work for you to do on all the Country Projects, even if it is just the stub assessment thing, it's more a question of your time and resources for doing it than a lack of demand. Just doing one-off runs would be very, very useful I feel.
- And perhaps the best way to convince people of the "new article" feature would be to do a dummy run that just produces a list of articles that could be tagged? If you're doing it off the database dump (are you - or live?) then it's a relatively "cheap" (in resource terms) way of doing things that would allow Project members to see whether the bot is appropriate for their Project.
- As for my bot - yes I know it's easy, it's within my PHP skills ;-/ so it can't be that complicated. I just thought it might be a good bot to cut my teeth on, easy but hopefully fulfilling a real need. Cheers FlagSteward (talk) 17:48, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- Please do mention it. I've been reluctant to "advertise" because I've only just completed a major rewrite of the bot that fits it into the api.php system rather than the query.php system. See [4]. As I get some more experience and iron out a few little bugs, I'm going to publish the code OpenSource (so you're welcome to play around with it) and see if I can get some of these functions placed on the ToolServer, available for any WikiProject.
- Thanks again for your info - and let me know if you want WPWine in on any of the "services" - for my projects, I find the "To-do list" function to be extremely valuable. And I just set up WPBiography to use it, so I'm pretty happy about that :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 17:58, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Cool - sounds like I'll hold off on the France and Spain requests until you're a bit more ready. Wine is ready to go, would probably make quite a nice test Project as it's not that big but a reasonable size, and quite active, so someone will probably notice any screwups. Sorry, I mean compile beta-testing reports. ;-/ Both a todo list and new articles by report would be nice for the Wine Project, but only when you're ready - probably just as a one-off for the moment, and then we'll see what the opinion of it is. Then you might want to go on to our parent project, Food and drink - far less active, quite a bit bigger and in worse shape. I've requested Wine and Italy over on the bot's request page BTW.
- From my own POV, it would be great if you could assess any Italy stubs ASAP, as I've set myself a little task of trying to clear the Italy Unassesseds - if you run WPBot1.0 after your run, we hopefully won't trip over each other.
- Brave man releasing your bot into the wild - I guess one major issue will be ensuring that ordinary Joes use full cats, otherwise if you think you've been copping some flak from Projects so far.... Cheers. FlagSteward (talk) 19:01, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Video policy
Satyr, can you point me in the right direction? I've followed every "video" link I can find on WP and can't find any discussion of when video is appropriate. Someone deleted a lot of video links from Automated Guided Vehicle and a couple of us are discussing on the talk page what to do about it. I'm inclined to let the deletion stand, and delete the rest besides, on the grounds that they are clearly produced as promotional videos, and because images could tell exactly the same story, with less bandwidth, and in an easier-to-patrol-for-spam fashion. Surely these issues have been discussed before, I'm surprised I can't find it. - Dan Dank55 (talk) 21:47, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, Dan! Do you mean as a reference? Or just an "external link"? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 01:16, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- I mean as an external link. That page has about a dozen links that were produced for promotional purposes that show automated vehicles doing very mundane things...I'm wondering where to read up on which kinds of video external links are "encyclopedic" and which aren't. I wrote in the talk page that I'm inclined to replace them all with one link to the search results for Automated Guided Vehicle on YouTube, since that's where all the videos come from...does that sound good? - Dan Dank55 (talk) 01:51, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- To be honest, I'm not thrilled with any of the links or references on that page except the two university links. Let me recommend WP:PSTS for a discussion of primary, secondary, and tertiary sources. The links to agvsystems.com and the other companies are all primary - they are written by the people making the AGVs. If at all possible, find links in books, newspapers and magazines that talk about the AGVs, comparing and contrasting, and explaining the systems to outsiders. Those would at least be secondary sources.
- And as far as your original question goes, I can understand why a video would be instructional and helpful to the article - seeing one of these bots in action would be great! Is it possible to find a video in the public domain? Perhaps find a gear-head that's caught some of them on cam at a show or convention? That way you can get them at least PD and not advertise for the specific company. Knowing the audience, I bet you can find dozens without even looking far :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 02:08, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Dear SatyrTN,
You deleted the Zoe Gustaves article because of apparent copyright infringement. Permission had been obtained although no notice of that fact was included with the article. My fault. A permission notice has since been added to the website source (please see [5]), and I did attempt to add this notice to the article, but it had already been deleted before I could do so.
I appreciate the standard set for Wikipedia and have tried, and will always try, to comply with that standard. In light of permission having been granted for the Wikipedia article and notice of this fact published by the source, I hope you will consider returning the Zoe Gustaves article to Wikipedia.

- Hi, Chick! Thanks for pointing that out. When someone incorrectly subst's the afd template, it leaves behind things like {{#if:19 January 2007|on 19 January 2007|recently}} in the page. The bot tries to interpret that as a template, which causes problems. I'm working on a solution, but haven't got it licked yet. why would it raise an eyebrow, it was completely lacking any context or continuity with the surrounding text. move to wikiquote? it's just an anecdote, although some may find it funny (including myself), random quotes are not encyclopedic. and when they are used they should be included in an appropriate manner. as for the gay porn actor mention. List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people: K-L
Hi, Angela from the Blue!
I'm curious about your adding Lord Donia to the List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people: K-L. First, you've managed to put him in the wrong place if he were supposed to go in the "L"s. Second, if "Lord" is a title (and the word isn't even in his article), then the article should go in the "D"s. Third, the claim of homosexuality needs to be backed up by a solid reference, both in his article *and* on the list.
I'm going to take him off the list for now. If you find the source you were looking for, please feel free to add it back in. Thanks! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 07:11, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, maybe he should be on the list under his full name: Pier Gerlofs Donia. Thus putting the confusion to an end. He should be in the D or P category, and not L because he might have been no lord at all. But he was a noted queer, as can be seen in the article. He deserves to be listed as such. But then under the right letter. Thanks in advanche, Angela from the Blue (talk) 07:22, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

This is the disambiguation guideline I was following in removing the disambiguation links:
- While there is no specific prohibition against it, adding disambiguation links to a page with a name that clearly distinguishes itself from the generic term is discouraged. For example, Solaris (1972 film) is clearly about one specific movie and not about any of the many other meanings of "Solaris". It is very unlikely that someone arriving there would have been looking for any other "Solaris", so it is unnecessary to add a link pointing to the Solaris disambiguation page. However, it would be perfectly appropriate to add a link to Solaris (novel) (but not, say, Solaris (operating system)) to its "See also" section.
Please let me know if you have any further concerns.
Neelix (talk) 22:32, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification! IMO, people should have links back to disambig pages, since "writer" (as relates to a person) isn't nearly as specific as the "1972 film" in the example. Just my opinion :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 22:35, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

the discussion obviously favors inclusion. as does logic. do you oppose its inclusion? If its due to redundancy perhaps we get rid of the 2nd mention? Its just prejudicial to leave out one of his major and most notable pursuits while including others.Boomgaylove (talk) 00:16, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
edit summaries
Thanks. I know; I was using AWB to make some changes, but some articles did not have the text I wanted to change. The articles nevertheless had 'general fixes' changes made to them which I saved as I did not disagree with them. I did not change the edit summary I was was using. I suppose I could have said "already indirectly in category and/or AWB general fixes". Not sure if this would help. I have not seen this done by other editors. Same-sex marriage and procreation
SatyrTN - you proposed that the entry Same-sex marriage and procreation be merged with Same-sex marriage. A few other people suggested as well. My response was that the current length of Same-sex marriage and procreation is quite long, and in time will be even longer as more quotes from court decisions and law review articles are added. Such length will be as long as that of Same-sex marriage itself, at the cost of overwhelmingly the aesthetics of the current page. Thus, like a few other Wikipages dealing with Same-sex marriage that have a separate existence, I would like to keep the procreation page separate as well (I have written most of the page over the past few weeks). At some point, I plan to add a few links on the Same-sex marriage entry to the Same-sex marriage and procreation entry (and I would be glad if you want to do so). So unless you object, I would like to edit out your suggestion to merge the two pages. Thanks. --Greg Aharonian (talk) 21:27, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Has there been discussion about the merger? I haven't seen anything about it - could you point it out to me? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 21:30, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
Shortly after I created the page, a few people put the page up for Deletion. While the critics eventually were satisfied (they wanted more factual material, which I added), an admin still deleted it, without explanation. After a discussion with the admin, the page was restored to version you see now. One person in the deletion discussion suggested the page be merged with Same-sex marriage, but seem to agree that the length was getting long enough to overwhelm if merged. So the issue of merger faded away. I am not sure where the keep past deletion dicussions, where you could see this. The original merger suggestion was made when the page was shorter, and as it grew in length, the issue was dropped. --Greg Aharonian (talk) 22:28, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Gene Robinson / Anglicanism
There are indeed quite a few notable individuals in the Anglicanism category. Given that there is rather a major controversy centering in part around Robinson's ordination, it's hard to argue that he isn't notable. I think you should restore the category label. Tb (talk) 16:17, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- I really feel the controversy surrounds issues, not this particular person. I'm not an expert in Anglicanism at all, but there are 300 articles in the can, only 31 of them are people, and probably half or more of those don't belong. My opinion is that Robinson belongs in Category:Anglican realignment, but not the super cat. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 16:32, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- I can't say I disagree with the goal of straightening up the categorization under Anglicanism. And I freely confess I haven't got the energy to work on that rather gargantuan task! I just spent today's wikipedia time tracing through a maze of undocumented/uncommented significant categorization changes by ZZcon, so I'm spent for now. :) Tb (talk) 21:54, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
Jerry Morton
Hi Satyr, I realise this Coronation Street character page was nominated for deletion along with many others, and the result was to merge to a list. However, the page keeps getting created, removed from the list, moved back to the list, redirected and so on. Currently, it redirects to the list, however the character is not actually on the list, and his image keeps getting tagged for deletion as it's orphaned etc. It's been tagged for deletion three times now due to all this changing around, and my page keeps getting spammed with image warnings, so I brought the issue up here Talk:List of recurring and minor Coronation Street characters#Jerry Morton. We would like to give this one character his own page, but keep it tagged as in-univers etc, while we look for sources. Would you object to this? 21:50, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- I'll let it go for two weeks, but I did a fairly good search for references to Jerry Morton and found almost none. You can see that every time it gets "recreated", the result falls far short of an acceptable article. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 21:57, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

- Jerry Morton. I made a start, found some sources and began to include some real world stuff. Is it ok to keep as a separate article now? I realise it needs improving/extending... Gungadin 23:25, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Your bot
Is it possible for your bot to run through all the articles at List of people from Mississippi and if they aren't tagged with Template:WPMiss, have it do so as {{WPMiss|class=start|importance=low}} ? - ✰ALLSTAR✰ echo 22:35, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Possibly? Let me pull together a quick list and get back to you. See, the way I would have to do it is get all the wikilinks on that page. To give you an example, that would mean getting:
- Jim Henson creator of The Muppets, (Leland, Mississippi)
- The bot doesn't have any way of knowing that "The Muppets" shouldn't be tagged. So I can pull together a list, have you do a quick review to remove the ones that don't belong, and then tag all those. Will that work? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 22:42, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Great thanks. I think a weekly run would be ok since it seems to be so fast on the maintenance runs rather than the first run. However, I was wondering if I commented out the template, would the bot recognise that the template was there and not add it? The reason I ask is that there are a few cats where there are one or two false positives and I don't want to get into a weekly rv war with the bot. I wonder if a commented out template would be recognised by the bot as "already there" so that the false positive won't be activated. Satyrbot request
Well, for starters, the schools category with this: {{WikiProject Canada|education=yes|bc=yes}}. But there are other categories I've noticed where a large volume of articles is in need of templates....another is Category:Defunct British Columbia provincial electoral districts where the template would be {{WikiProject Canada|cangov=yes|riding=yes|bc=yes}}. Is it only you that can run the bot or are others permitted to take the reins? I know there's more "bulk templating" cats out there, just in the BC WikiProject alone.....23:56, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, Skookum1! The code for the bot isn't quite ready for public release yet. And since it's editing on my account, I kinda keep close tabs on what it's doing :)
- What I've done for other projects is have them pull together a full list of categories. For instance, WP:VIET has the bot go through Wikipedia:WikiProject Vietnam/Categories every so often and tag anything that doesn't already have a tag.
- It sounds like your project is a tad different, since you've got some parameters that are going to be different depending on the categories. My initial reaction is that your best bet is to pull together categories in groups related to what parameters you want. For example:
BC | Education | Government |
---|---|---|
( I recommend having separate pages for each of these columns )
- When the bot goes through, it will have to look at each article and examine which categories are on the article, then add parameters based on that.
- That does mean, however, quite a bit of prep-work. Someone (or several people in WP:CANADA?) will have to review the categories and put them in the appropriate areas. The advantage to doing that, though, is that you're then all organized and able to work.
- Sorry I don't have a quicker or easier solution to offer! If you want, check at WP:BOTREQ again and see if anyone else has something easier. Though it will be worth it, if you're willing to put in the time and effort :) -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 01:59, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Talk:Matt Sanchez
You're right, though. Please don't give up. It's a clear BLP violation, and I'm really bothered at how much of that is going on with that particular article. At this point, I only feel comfortable fighting one battle at a time with that particular article, and I'm choosing to fight the battle of unbolding the "porn names". Perhaps I'll move on to another after that. - Philippe | Talk 03:42, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
No, Sanchez is not a writer.
If Sanchez is communicating to you that he wrote for the The New Republic, he's lying. He has never written for that publication. Scott Thomas Beauchamp did, however. Sanchez as escort?
SatyrTN, I have added a comment to the discussion you were having with benjiboi at his talk page. I have quoted a statement from The Advocate in 2008 that states without qualification that Matt is a celebrity in gay circles as porn star Matt Sanchez and as an escort. I am wondering whether this can end the issue of finding a reliable third-party source for the escort claim that meets WP standards? Comments would be appreciated. Hello SatyrnTN, I've gone ahead and added serveral reference links to the entry now and feel I have given enough credible references that this document can be reinstated in the general area. Can you please take a look and let me know your decision? Thank you.
Sat, please see my update on my talk section. I am still at a loss as to why others with similar pages have existed for so long yet my entry is being questioned. Thanks --MojoKid HH (talk) 20:23, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Updated my talk page again. Was in the middle of an edit. Thanks --MojoKid HH (talk) 21:00, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

- What do you classify significant coverage from multiple third-party sources? I've listed and referenced 4 Fortune 100 companies postings about us and two VERY large web sites that reference our material. I really do not understand what needs to be done to pass "notability". Can you please shed more light? Thanks --MojoKid HH (talk) 21:11, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

- Again, any clarification on what you feel would be sufficient coverage from third-party sources would be appreciated. I have three major Fortune 1000 companies with quotes/references and two large websites quoting our source content here. Also, I don't see the move option to push it back out to mainspace. Could you assist? Thanks! --MojoKid HH (talk) 21:38, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

The Cancer Journals
It's a lesbian-feminist book? One of the chapter focuses on her reliance on lesbian love - please read the summary or even the title of the chapter...Why do you insist on saying LGBT books are not actually so?Zigzig20s (talk) 15:15, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry - my bad. I didn't read close enough. Should the book also be in "LGBT-related literature" or "Lesbion lit" or whatever? As to "why", I don't write a lot of articles. Instead I review, categorize, cleanup, and generally be a WikiFaerie. Please don't get offended? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:22, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- The trouble is it's non-fiction, so not literature per se, though maybe in the loose sense?Zigzig20s (talk) 15:42, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Literature is fiction only? IMHO, "literature" can be either fict or nonfict. But I'm no expert! =D -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:45, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well in the loose sense any written text can be called literature, but in a more theoretical sense it's a craft, often fictional but sometimes not - e.g. some autobiographies...Actually I tend to think The Cancer Journals has some poetic prose to it - but then I found it in the medical section in my campus library...Zigzig20s (talk) 15:53, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Re: SatyrBot & Anime
Thanks. I already spotted several false positives, pages reporting as not having the project's template even thought they do. I wonder if this has something to do with the project template being split across multiple lines do to the amount of parameter calls as that is the one thing they have in common. --Farix (Talk) 18:52, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- No, the bot knows about that. Can you give me some examples? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 19:53, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, I think I see the issue. The ones I checked where being redirected to another talk page. Example : Talk:List of Naruto episodes (seasons 5-6) was being redirected to Talk:List of Naruto episodes which has the project template. But then, my brain has turned to mush these last few days as I have been adding the listas parameter to properly sort articles beginning with "The", "A", "An", and "List of". --Farix (Talk) 20:29, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
your redaction of opaquely sourced material
Concerning this ...
Farnsworth: "Good news everyone! I'm sending you all on a highly controversial mission!"
Fry: Controversial?
Farnsworth: "Oh my, no."
(Cut to Prof's lab)
Farnsworth: "On this highly controversial mission..."

RE: your redactions - I addressed your concerns about source material for another user some time ago, @ http://pax.vox.com/library/post/in-the-beginning-was-the-word-but-it-was-wpor-wpself.html
Since it wasn't verifiably sourced elsewhere, and blogs of notable people are considered verifiable sources, I elected to self-create a verifiable source at that time for the sole purpose of resolving this issue.
It may not quite mesh with the _spirit_ of the matter, but damned if it doesn't address the question, technically.
Number 1.0: Bureaucrat Conrad, you are technically correct -- the best kind of correct. I hereby promote you to grade 37. [He changes Hermes' badge to 37. He points at Morgan.] And as for you. (shouting) Guards! [Guards surround Morgan.] (talking) Bring me the forms I need to fill out to have her taken away!

Now, since WP:AUTO is discouraged, I regret that I now have to point you to the slightly snarky WP:SOFIXIT. Seriously though, thank you for your efforts to improve Wikipedia, past, pending, and future.

- I was srsly wondering about your hacking skillz there for a minute. I'm still wondering.
- The snarkiness of the blog post (which I read when researching your sexuality before removing it from your WP article) led me to remove it from your WP article :) I mean a) "let's say I'm bisexual" is not opaque, and b) your sexuality seems to have nothing to do with your notability. But, since you asked... I suppose I can add it back in.

- "Category:Homeless people"? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 20:17, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

-
- I thought "Category:Homeless people" was perhaps a bit of a stretch on someones part. Nevertheless, numerous bio articles contain random personal trivia relevant to character development. I mean, how important are George Washington's teeth to his historic notability? But who would (meritoriously) argue to exclude them?

- Obviously, there's a fine line between informing and distracting the reader, but I've always felt it's important to err on the side of inclusion when it comes to deciding what might be relevant to the reader. Being the first Google hit for many names is not something to be considered lightly, and carries an implied responsibility of painting an inclusive picture.

SatyrTN, as you may be aware, SwatJester has started a thread at ANI about his recent block of Eleemosynary for a violation of 3RR on Matt Sanchez. I feel I should notify you that I have repoded to that thread. Whilst my post is primarily concerned with SwatJester's actions, I have provided evidence that you also violated 3RR. Lonnie Frisbee again
See the history. See this too. Aside from the fact that HiDrNick has taken to stalking me on WP now, could you deal with the issue at this article again? User:Barkonst keeps removing the content. You've reverted him once as has other users. - ✰ALLSTAR✰ echo 20:04, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Already done. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 20:12, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Please reconsider your use of administrative tools on this article. Protecting a version of the article that you yourself reverted to just a day ago creates an appearance of impropriety. ➪HiDrNick! 20:53, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
As a courtesy, FYI this regarding you on ANI. - ✰ALLSTAR✰ echo 02:52, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Opera Project "To Do List"
I guess you've been very busy the last week. Anyway whenever you are ready to run the bot it will be fine with us. -- Kleinzach (talk) 04:21, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hunh. I didn't leave you a message, did I? Sorry about that!
- On the 22nd (and every Friday), SatyrBot will update a set of sub-pages on the project. You can see the full list of "To-do" items at Wikipedia:WikiProject Opera/to do full list. In addition, the bot will create a random sampling of the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Opera/To do list short. That's the one I would keep bookmarked, since the bot will update it every time.
- Sorry I didn't leave you a note! Let me know if the bot messes up in any serious way. Thanks! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 15:15, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Defending your honor
A COI editor at Talk:Jim Bailey (entertainer) said something that could be interpreted as implying (en passant) that you were a homophobe. I just posted a lengthy response saying (also en passant) that I thought it unlikely. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:12, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- My knight in shiny orange armor, thank you :) I honestly have no clue who Bailey was/is, and while he may very well be notable, the article reads like a {{db-bio}}. I may see if Benjiboi is interested in that one, since he's an absolute wiz at finding references and substantiating notability. Thanks for the heads-up!
WP:CRIC
Hi there again. I discussed this with the rest of the cricket project at WT:CRIC and we would like you to use your bot tag our cricket categories, which are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Categories2 in the same way as WP:VIET I think. - Thanks :) I don't care one way or another, but the article claims an award, and wasn't blatant spam, so it wasn't really eligible for Speedy. Thanks for the heads-up! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 16:12, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of Punk Like Me
Hello!
It seems that My article about the book "Punk Like Me" was deleted for copyright issues. Can you please tell me how to resolve this. I am in direct contact with the author and can provide any permission needed.
Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dvince (talk • contribs)
- Hi, Dvince!
- Wikipedia has pretty strict rules about copyrighted material. You can look over WP:COPY if you have questions. My suggestion, though, would be to start the article fresh and new. Given the subject, post a note at the LGBT WikiProject and/or the Novels WikiProject. Hope that helps! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 19:20, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Hi, SatyrTN! Thank you for your quick response, but as this is all new to me can you please explain more to me what kind of note shouls I post to the projects you mentioned.
Regards Dvince (talk) 19:39, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

- A simple note that you've created the article (or are going to) and then asking for input from people that have experience writing articles about Novels - or on LGBT subjects. For instance, User:Moni3 recently worked hard on the Ann Bannon article, so she might be a good resource for writing your article.
- Hope that helps! -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 21:45, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
