Saturday Night Live season 19

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saturday Night Live aired its nineteenth season during the 1993-1994 television season on NBC. This season, much like season eighteen, had performances that caused controversy:

  • Musical guest Cypress Hill (for the episode hosted by Shannen Doherty) were banned from performing on SNL after trashing their dressing rooms and smoking marijuana backstage.
  • The episode hosted by Alec Baldwin and his (then) wife, Kim Basinger, had a sketch where Baldwin played a Boy Scout troop leader named Mr. Armstrong who attempted to sexually molest Adam Sandler's recurring character, Canteen Boy.
  • The episode immediately after that was hosted by Martin Lawrence, who shocked the audience with a monologue about the decline of feminine hygiene. As a result, Lawrence was banned from hosting SNL and all reruns (both 60-minute syndicated versions and full 90-minute reruns) have a series of cards that explain Lawrence's monologue and the reason why it can never be shown again in televised reruns.

This season also saw the final appearances of Phil Hartman and Julia Sweeney. The season began on September 25, 1993 and ended on May 14, 1994.

  • The 60-minute rerun of the episode has been edited to remove the infamous sketch where Adam Sandler's Canteen Boy is molested by his scoutmaster (played by Alec Baldwin). This is not cut in reruns of the 90-minute version and is included in the DVD versions of the SNL "Best Of" specials for Adam Sandler and Alec Baldwin (and is included in the DVD special: "SNL's Bad Boys").
360 (19.14) February 19, 1994 Martin Lawrence Crash Test Dummies
  • The monologue in the syndication reruns is edited to remove Lawrence's comments about the decline in feminine hygiene, and is replaced with a graphic explaining the comments and how it almost cost everyone at SNL their jobs. Martin Lawrence was consequently banned from appearing on the show again.
361 (19.15) March 12, 1994 Nancy Kerrigan Aretha Franklin
  • Originally, the episode was supposed to be hosted by Michael Richards (the actor who played Kramer on Seinfeld and was a castmember on ABC's short-lived sketch show "Fridays"). To date, Richards is the only member of Seinfeld's main cast who has not appeared on the show; Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander have both hosted, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus was a cast member on SNL in the 1980s and became the first female castmember from SNL to host SNL in May 2006 (and to host again in March 2007).
  • Michael McKean's first episode as a cast member.

366 (19.20) May 14, 1994 Heather Locklear Janet Jackson
  • This is Phil Hartman's, Julia Sweeney's, Rob Schneider's, Sarah Silverman's, and Melanie Hutsell's final episode as cast members
