[edit] Origin and recording

It features music written by guitarist Stone Gossard and lyics written by lead singer Eddie Vedder. Drums on "Satan's Bed" were performed by Dave Abbruzzese's drum tech Jimmy Shoaf. On the day it was recorded, Abbruzzese was in the hospital having his tonsils removed. Vedder and Gossard were working on the song, and asked for Shoaf's help to get a drum machine working. After setting up the drum machine, the pair asked Shoaf to perform the same beat on the drums. Shoaf noted later that he didn't expect his performance to actually make the record. He is credited on the lyric sheet as "Jimmy".[1]

Guitarist Mike McCready on the song:

That's another Stone song. The solo is definitely my tribute to Angus Young; I was trying to do my Angus thing. I'm sure Eddie won't like reading that.[2]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

The song's lyrics are about resisting the temptation of fame and celebrity. Vedder derides professional models with the lyrics "Such fine examples, skinny little bitch/Model, role model, roll some models in blood/Get some flesh to stick, so they look like us."[3]

[edit] Live performances

The song was premiered live at the band's April 3, 1994 concert in Atlanta, Georgia.[4] After the band's October 7, 1996 concert in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the song was not performed for over six years. The song finally made a return appearance at the band's May 3, 2003 concert in State College, Pennsylvania.[4] On the song's return, Vedder struggled with remembering the lyrics, making repeated mistakes. Subsequently, the song was played several times on the band's 2006 tour. A live performance of "Satan's Bed" can be found on the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set.
