[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Mangalpandey.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Mangalpandey.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 08:10, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Dear Sarayuparin, Thank you for the image Image:Mangalpandey.jpg. Unfortunately no where it has been specified that this image is in public domain. In most of the websearches for Managl Panedy this image is thrown up. If you want to upload this particular image to the article then you have to cite as to why this is a public domain image and should include source information. For many months the article didnt had a image of Managal Pandey so I tried to create a similar image from the one on the Government of India stamp. The existing image is in public domain..
- Many a times this particular photo (the one which has been uploaded by you currently) was added to wikipedia by many users..Due to copyright issues it gets deleted in few days...IndianCow Talk 13:23, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- It can be used under fair use. But fair use always comes with a cavet. For more information you can refer Wikipedia:Fair use. For this reason itslef I created the PD image, which can be later used by other people for their own reference.
-
- Fair use should only be used if there is no eqvivalent image for that subject. In case of Mangal Pandey all the photos are works of imagination. No artist did ever had a chance to draw his potrait. So I believe the one which we have in the article should serve the purpose and it is similar to the one used by government of India.
-
- In future if you upload some image and want to use it under fair use then please give an elaborate rationale as to why it is used or else again it will be deleted.. -IndianCow Talk 11:16, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Welcome to Wikiproject India
Welcome!
Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.
A few features that you might find helpful:
There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:
- Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
- Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! -- Lost(talk) 03:22, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Urdu Poetry
Hello Sarayuparin! I never got a response from you regrading the Etymology of Hindi. If you still have any comments on this issue, please feel free to let me know. Also, I noticed that you watch Urdu poetry and was wondering about your opinion on the sections I added to the article. It seems as if those edits were unwelcome and have been reverted twice. Your valuable comments will be highly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks, AnupamTalk 23:52, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your prompt reply! Yes, those are the reverts I am referring to. I thought the scripts and the two sections I added were very helpful and improved the quality of the article. What's your opinion of leaving the Devanagari and Perso-Arabic scripts on the article? Thanks in advance. I look forward to hearing from you soon. With regards, AnupamTalk 22:26, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with you. Showing an example of Urdu poetry on the article pertaining to it is beneficial. The Perso-Arabic is relevant because it is the script used to write Urdu poetry and the Devanagari script is relevant based on the information in the section Scripts used in Poetry. Do you think it would be appropriate for me to revert the article to my version or do you have any other suggestions? Thanks for your help in this situation. I really appreciate it. AnupamTalk 22:54, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for all your advice Sarayuparin. It is very much appreciated. I hope to start a discussion on the Urdu poetry talk page later this week. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved there. Thanks again. Khuda hafiz, AnupamTalk 07:18, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006
Project News
|
- Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
- New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
- Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

Note from Editor's Desk

- Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.
- As before, we'd like to stress, this is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know. Sponsored content for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll be very happy to include them here.
- Before we sign off, Advance New Year Wishes, everyone.

- How to?: The "how to" part of assessment is very simple. Just head on to the talk page of any India related page and you'll find the {{WP India}} template. Simply classify the article based on the content and the criteria mentioned here. You can find the detailed instructions here. If you think it may qualify for GA/FA status, first consider submitting the article for peer review.

[edit] Merry Christmas!
In Him was life, and that life was the Light of men. John 1:4 KJV
Dear Sarayuparin,
Love came to a stable on that very special night to bring us out of darkness into His glorious light. May Jesus touch your life with gladness and warm your heart with love as we celebrate His birth. I hope you have a Blessed Christmas, AnupamTalk 06:14, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- Your'e very welcome! I hope you had a good Christmas and are looking forward to the new year! AnupamTalk 06:42, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
Hello Sarayuparin! I noticed you reverted my edit on the Hindi article. If you look at the reference provided by ethnologue, you will note that variants are delineated in the first and second sentences of the "Comments" section. If Urdu must be deleted from the infobox, Hindustani must be deleted as well because it is the progneitor of both registers -- Hindi and Urdu. Your opinions on this issue would be highly appreciated. With regards, AnupamTalk 04:40, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Sarayuparin! It's alright. These things happen all the time! =) Could you please kindly revert/readd the deleted information then? Thanks, AnupamTalk 22:04, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- Sarayuparin, the Sanskrit in the etymology section of Chand Raat appears to be incorrect. Since you know more Sanskrit than I, could you please correct it? With regards, AnupamTalk 22:28, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Ayyavazhi
Please see here. The discussion is going on. So please revert your present revert. Ayyavazhi is cited with university papers and was added there in the article. - Paul 22:02, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Please revert to the previous edits. See the earlier situation. I waited after citing with university papers for morethan 98hrs. Now you reverted the edits without a single word to discuss. please revert as per university citations. - Paul 22:09, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- The discussion is not going on in my talk page but the discussion page of India. See the university papers I cited. Solid and valid proofs. Revert as per the cited sources. No reply had come against this citations. University reserch is considered most valid in wikipedia? What is the use if some body edit without discussing to valid sources cited some 96 hrs ago? So please revert - Paul 22:14, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re:Chand Raat
Hi Sarayuparin! Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am aware of that. I was the one who actually added the Sanskritic etymology in the article. Fowler&fowler pointed possible errors in the Devanagari Sanskrit spellings. Looking at your userpage, I noticed that you know Sanskrit and am thus requesting you to check/fix the incorrect Sanskrit spellings in the article. Can you do so please? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, AnupamTalk 00:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
- Also, thanks for your edit to the article. I actually suggested that myself on the talk page but seeing as how the conversation was going on the talk page, decided that it might be to contentious. Your comments on the talk page would be appreciated. With regards, AnupamTalk 00:07, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for making the corrections. I really appreciate it. With regards, AnupamTalk 00:25, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

- Yeah, so much effort and seemingly all for naught. I probably will remove that one word, but I wouldn't be surprised if he starts up again right away. Wikipedia has to find a better way of dealing with these lone-POV-rangers. So much time and effort is spent by well-meaning editors in explaining things to them, and it is not even clear if they understand anything ... Fowler&fowler«Talk» 21:54, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Two Articles in need of your attention
There are two entries at Wikipedia, which have falsely created -- they are Turco-Persian and Turko-Persian Tradition. Both entries are factitious. I have requested the entries to be deleted. My reasons are:
- The term Turko-Persian Tradition (or Turco-Persian) does not exists academically and it is a factitious entry! Check the Encyclopaedia Iranica to confirm -- The correct name for that culture is the Persianate culture not the "Turko-Persian". Turkophones (mostly of mixed race and Persianized in culture) only spoke in Turkic dialects and were in the military. That is not enough participation in creating and forming the culture to deserve the name "Turko-Persian Tradition" – This is misinformation. All the elements in that area, which have to do with tradition and culture, were drawn from the Iranian culture (Persian, Kurdish, Azari, Baluchi, Tajik, Luri, Gilaki, Talishi, Mazandarani, etc.), and the Islamic faith, not much Turkic elements (like shamanism, yurts etc.) were incorporated in. That is what makes the name "Turko-Persian" an imaginary one and therefore the entry should be deleted.
Any contributions would greatly appreciated. Bā Sepās Surena 02:29, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

- Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
- Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

- Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([1]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [2]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
- Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.
- Arbitration: Three cases are either in progress or have recently ended.
- Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/India-Pakistan regarding the activities of various Indian and Pakistani editors on pages related to Indian subcontinent history topics, the national status of various pre-Partition figures, and edit-warring over Indic scripts and WikiProject tags was held and concluded in late February- early March. As a result of this, four Pakistani users, Siddiqui, Szhaider, Nadirali and Unre4L were all banned for one year for disruption via edit-warring and confrontationalism.
- Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Sathya Sai Baba 2 regarding a dispute over the article of the religious teacher closed in early March with four users indefinitely banned from the article.
- Currently, Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Freedom_skies is in the evidence phase. It is concerned with the editing of Freedom_skies, who edits articles on ancient Indian history, primarily civilisation articles such as Indian mathematics and related articles, as well as Buddhism articles such as Pusyamitra Sunga, as well as those pertaining to the propagation of Mahayana Buddhism to China such as Bodhidharma and Zen.

It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. Sponsored content for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome, including requests for copyediting, photographic work, peer review, etc. We'll be very happy to include them here.

- Translation Department: Can you read and write any languages of India? Do you know multiple languages and are looking to keep your skills at a high level or improve them? If so, the Translation Depeartment may be for you!
The translation department of the India WikiProject aims to utilize high-quality non-English material related to India for the goals of the project. This includes both translating articles from and to other-language Wikipedias as well as assisting contributors with non-English sources. The department aims to provide services in transliteration, formulating scripts for various languages, as well as translating articles from one language to another and validating sources in other languages to that of the encyclopedia article. If you are looking for a friendly translator here is your go-to point. Currently, we are still seeking representation for Kashmiri, Nepali, Oriya, Sindhi and Tulu, as well as reinforcements in all other languages.

Hello, I need your assistance in the french article fr:Deccan. We made an etymological research and we found several different versions. I tried to transcribe them in devanagari but I am not sure. dakṣiṇāpathas in sanskrit दक्षिणापथस or दक्षिणापथस् (with a virama)? dakṣiṇam (is this a correct form with - m?) transcribed दक्षिणम or with the virama दक्षिणम् ? Thank you for your help. Please answer me here --- Bobsodium 08:43, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 100-word list for your Mother tongue
Good day! Could you help me and provide translations for the following 100 basic word in your mother tongue. Not in the standard Hindi but in your native local variety (dialect) if you (used to) speak any (and then indicate please how you call your language /dialect and precise location like state –district – town/village). If there are synonyms or known dialectal variants provide them with comments if possible. Also please indicate if you know that certain words are borrowing. You can fill in right here using either IPA transcription or some other spelling you like (just describe your conventions). Thank you in advance! --Koryakov Yuri 16:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
