[edit] Thanks for the correction
Saravask, thanks for correcting my wrong revert. It's being difficult to assume good faith all the time with anonymous fact changers. That's why I promptly reverted the edit without verifying myself. My bad. Thanks for setting the record straight. :-) -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:35, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
By the way, why did you redirect your talk page to an archive? Just curious. I've reverted it for now thinking that it could be a mistake. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:40, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Space after footnote
Thanks for pointing out the problem. I use to leave the space, but then I read this and understood it to mean the space after the footnote! Fowler&fowler 12:38, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Hi!
Saw you doing some edits in Tagore. I made a change in Tagore, redirecting it to Rabindranath Tagore. And made the new page Tagore (disambiguation) for all the Tagores. Added a notice at the start of Rabindranath Tagore. I think it's ok. What do you think? Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:24, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] India article - please explain your reverts on the talk page. Do not revert war.
I am sorry, but you should stop acting like you own the India article. I dont have to establish that Ugadi and Sankranti are as 'notable' or widely celebrated as Pongal or Holi. This is common knowledge. You need to get your facts right and clarify it on whatever talk page you want with whosoever you wish. Holi is not even a public holiday in many parts of the country. Dasara is the biggest festival of Karnataka, Bengal and Gujarat. It is the official state festival of Karnataka. It is also celebrated in every other part of the country. Ugadi and Sankranti are the new year and harvest festivals of almost half the country. Pongal is limited to the state of Tamil Nadu and only to the state of Tamil Nadu. Ganesh Chaturthi is arguably the most widely celebrated festival of India and it doesnt even find a place in your scheme of things! You seem to know squat about Indian festivals. So go get your facts right before you start owning articles and pushing POV. Sarvagnya 16:35, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I appreciate your concern for brevity. But I am more concerned about the systemic bias you are introducing in your unreasonable and unnecessary quest for brevity. India is a big country and one with many different cultures, ethnicities, demographics, religions etc.,. No one is superior or inferior to the other and you will also have to treat them as such. India is probably what shows up as the first link when anybody in the world uses a search engine to look up "India". That being the case, we should make sure that it is as NPOV as possible. If a few words more can go towards making the section or article NPOV and removes systemic bias, we should go for it.
- And in any case, your stand is simply unreasonable. Sankranti is every bit as notable as Pongal. How can you include Pongal and not include Sankranti. Keeping Ganesh Chaturti out of the list(however small you want it to be) is ridiculous.
- Bollywood movies and popular media do enough to promote systemic biases and stereotypes. There is no reason for wikipedia to follow suit. Holi doesnt become more notable than Ganesh Chaturthi simply because there is a Holi song in every bollywood movie while none about Ganesh Chaturthi. I hope you see my point. I hope you realise the kind of systemic bias and stereotypes you're promoting.
- Vis a vis Pongal, once again, you're promoting the stereotype that anything south of the Vindhyas has to be madrasi. My point is just this. Either remove festivals that are region/state specific or include those of all regions/states.
- If you think you have given enough explanations, I think you havent. You only have kept harping on "summary", "summary", "summary". This is not going to cut it. If 'listcruft' is your concern, NPOV and 'systemic bias-cruft'/'stereotype-cruft' is my concern. I am sure my concerns are more valid than yours. Adding names of 3 or 4 extra festivals is only going to increase the length by a couple of hundred bytes and I am sure we can afford that for the NPOV it introduces. Sarvagnya 19:43, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- However, we are encouraging contributors to add information on flora and fauna or the military. Focusing on those topics would help more than endlessly adding new items to already representative lists.
- Who are you to tell editors what they should be working on and who are you to decide what is 'representative'? How did you arrive at your so called 'representative' list? And what gives you the authority to act like you own the article? Also your comments like ".....bad edits will be reverted..."...(while replying to me where I was explaining my edits) reeks of high handed snobbish behaviour. Sarvagnya 20:10, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Flora and Fauna
Hi, Where should the Flora and Fauna section go? After "Culture?" Also, how long should it be? You could describe its size relative to another section. And how many pictures? Thanks. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 20:52, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your advice. It was very timely! I pulled out my India flora/fauna books earlier today. It turns out I have more than I had thought. Here's is what I have:
- * Blatter, E. and W.S. Millard, Some Beautiful Indian Trees. Bombay Natural History Society 1997 reprint of 1954 second edition.
- * Ali, Salim and S. Dillon Ripley (with Illustrations by J.H. Dick). A Pictorial Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent. Bombay Natural History Society 2nd edition. 1995.
- * Prater, S.H. The book of Indian Animals Bombay Natural History Society and OUP. 1995 reprint of 1971 3rd edition.
- * Tritsch, M.E. Wildlife of India Harper Collins. 2001. (This book has nice short essays on various topics.)
- * Insight Guids, Indian Wildlife (edited by Samuel Israel and Toby Sinclair), Apa Publications, 2001. (This too has nice essays.)
- The first three are classics with beautiful old illustrations, but probably with some dated material. Will add stuff to your page every now and then, when I digest some information. Thanks again. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 04:43, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

- No, I wasn't setting up a laundry list, but just the list from which the smaller notables should come. As I said in a edit summary ("let's downsize later"). Part of the problem is that the f&f is now on the India page rather than your page. If you put it back on your page, I'll be happy to add the list there and we can then downsize. Or better yet, I will remove the list from the India page and create a f&f sandbox on my page and will work there and so can you. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 04:35, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] help with infobox
I have taken a look at the Indian Jurisdiction infobox, and am totally jealous. I am trying to create infoboxes for Dhaka Thanas and Bangladesh Districts. I need help on that, but it seems that Bangladeshi Wikipedians (at least those that I talked to) are not much upto the task. Can you please help? I have noticed your formidable presence in the collaboration on the Indian infobox. - Aditya Kabir 10:34, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Editing Flora and Fauna
OK, I've put the list back. I've written it out with some explanations so that it is obvious what the animals are. I think the vignettes is a great idea. I think the list is a good representative list of flora, mammals, birds, and reptiles, in that it covers the range well from small to large etc. I removed bintourang because, although it occurs in NE India, it is really more representative of SE Asia and similarly for the caracal is more representative of West Asia. Many of the links themselves will give ideas for vignettes. Some examples that come to mind are:
- The Bishnoi and the Blackbuck
- The decline of the Chinkara and Blackbuck and the extinction of the Indian cheetah.
- The Dhole and disembowling of the prey.
- The Indian mongoose and the Jungle Book.
- the return of the Barasinga from the brink
- the angry charge of the male Gaur
- the near extinction of the Indian White-rumped Vulture as result of the veterinary drug Diclofenac
- the cruelty inflicted on Indian spiny tailed lizard for use in folk medicine.
- the sacred fig tree Pipal and the Buddha etc. etc.
I can think of many more, but you obviously have ideas of your own. Why don't you go first? I wait until I see what you've done. How does that sound? Fowler&fowler«Talk» 05:32, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- OK, will attend to the vignettes tomorrow. As for S&Co., it's way beyond the point of diminishing returns for me. I've given up on responding. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 06:20, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm done with f&f. Let me know what you think. Ideally, I'd like to break it into 3 smaller paragraphs, but can't think how right now. Look forward to feedback. I removed one of your citations, because the UNEP one seemed more reliable. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 04:34, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Just saw your copy edit of f&f. Looks great! Australia, eat your heart out! BTW, I just noticed on this page that you did work on saffron (the plant) and its history. [edit] India Article, Indian Navy article
The section on Indian military in the India article need to be expanded. This is a main article and hence the Military information need to be precise. Requesting your help in expanding it and also the Indian Navy article need to be copyedited. Thanking you. Chanakyathegreat 04:15, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Thank you. Chanakyathegreat 10:58, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
Good work done on Indian Navy article. Keep going. Another thing I would like to bring to your notice is that, the inclusion of Military and foreign relations did not suit India. India did not use military as a way of foreign relations. If the Military section expands it need to be seperated.
Thanking you Chanakyathegreat 03:55, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
It is a long term goal and I am not in a hurry to change it. It requires better understanding of this subject on how different nations utilise their military in foreign relations and whether India has a similar usage of the military or the military is a component only for the protection of the nation. It will take time, sometimes 4-5 months. Thank you. Chanakyathegreat 05:51, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
The Role section has been rewritten with the old one as the newone is not exactly reflecting what is said in the doctrine. Thanking you. Chanakyathegreat 02:08, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't realize that you had replied! Thanks for your insights! Yeah, you are right about the perceived slight. Best to let sleeping dogs lie. [edit] Geo-stubs
Hi - I see you've made a few stub articles on places in New Mexico ((good work!) One small note - all US states have their own geo-stub templates, of the form StateName-geo-stub. So if you make any more, could you use {{NewMexico-geo-stub}} rather than just geo-stub? Just saves a little worrk further down the line:) Cheers! Grutness...wha? 06:25, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. Saravask 13:54, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Chaco
This is a protected area, where geography is of primary importance. See FA's like Yosemite_National_Park and others. As for the sites and ruins, it appears logical to go from the general to the specific and the text actually reads that way. If you've been to Chaco, then you know the first thing you encounter is the stark geography, which makes you wonder how anyone could live in a place like this. Which brings us next to the history of the place, and leads one to reflect on the sites surrounding the area, composed of many ruins. —Viriditas | Talk 20:53, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] FYI: Your 1-week block of Users Szhaider, Nadirali, and Unre4L
Hi, Don't mean to get you entangled in POV-wars, but since you figured in this posting, I thought I'd let you know that I posted the following on Rama's Arrow's talk page:
Dear Rama's Arrow, As someone who has done battle on occasion with all three users, I nonetheless feel that your recent week-long blocks of them, especially the latter two, are a little heavy-handed and over the top. I feel that they should have been given more warning, and perhaps slapped with 24-hour, or 48-hour or even 3-day blocks first. I went back and re-read WP:NPA, especially the following, which I'm sure you well know:
“ | In extreme cases, even isolated personal attacks may lead to a block for disruption. Legal threats, death threats, and issues of similar severity, in particular, may result in a block without warning. However, administrators are cautioned that other resolutions are preferable to blocking for less severe situations when it is unclear if the "conduct severely disrupts the project". | ” |
In light of the above caution, I actually went through Unre4L's "contributions" log between the time you gave him a warning on his talk page and the time you issued a 1-week block. Although, I am sure you have your reasons for blocking him/her, I personally couldn't find anything that disruptive, and feel that the 1-week block is extreme punishment for the crime at hand. I am not asking for your reasons, but simply that two neutral administrators (like say Dbachmann, Nichalp (if he is not too busy), Saravask, Ragib, or Aksi_great) review the blocks, especially those of users Nadirali and Unre4L. Thanks! Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 11:54, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Copyvio
I restored previously removed text due to its structural and narrative integrity. The current version has many problems with composition. You reverted my restoration/merge with a claim of "copyvio". The original author who added that text may have swiped a few lines from NPS, but their disclaimer says that they have released this into the public domain. I would like to see this version restored with cites to the NPS added and a rewrite in problem areas. —Viriditas | Talk 22:27, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'm trying to figure out how you read my above comment as a defense of plagiarism. I guess "cites" and "rewrite" aren't clear enough. —Viriditas | Talk 22:57, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Conundrum
Hi Saravask,
I am almost at the end of my tether with bickering on the Talk:India page. A number of editors, some well-intentioned (like user:Indianstar and user:AJ-India) and others of uncertain intentions (like user:Sarvagnya) would like to add (or, have already added and which I then reverted) various portions of text to many sections of the India page, an FA. These proposed edits, all initially made by user:Indianstar are not minor (i.e. they are of the size of a small paragraph), and they have not been discussed before. I have tried to start discussion going on the Talk:India page, for example: see Example1, or Example2 (the title of this section has been changed retroactively by user:Sarvagnya from "History section" to "Fowler's High-handed Reverts"). The problem as I see it is that the edits are either controversial, or cover old ground, or too listy. I get the feeling that these editors are not really interested in discussing the issues because they keep accusing me of "making a mountain out of molehill" or semantic obfuscation. Their view is that their edits are common-sense and 1 or 2 KB or text is no problem, and that no time should be wasted on discussion, especially elaborate discussion like mine. Here is an example of some responses: Example3 and Example4. In the background, user:Sarvagnya seems to be egging on the other editors to go ahead and add the reverted material again before the discussion is complete. I am trying to hold on until Nichalp returns from his vacation on February 4, but in light of user:Sarvagnya's unmitigated hostility, I am concerned. She/He has used uncivil language consistently. Here are some examples of language directed at me:
- "Will someone do me a favour by drilling it into his skull ..."
- "hiding behind an admin to justify juvenile editing practices ..."
- "Just improve it. Dammit."
In spite of my civil reminder to desist (see here), she/he has continued with his uncivil language and earlier today she/he changed the title of the discussion section retroactively from "History Section" to "Fowler's High-handed Reverts". (The discussion section incidentally had been started by me.) I am trying to keep my cool, but it is frustrating to hear such language consistently, when most of me, judging from the level sophistication of her/his writing, is itching to say something. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 20:07, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- PS Hi, I've started a RfC Talk:India#Request_for_Comment:_Adding_new_material_to_the_India_page_history_section. Any comments and feedback, at your convenience, will be welcome! Fowler&fowler«Talk» 03:43, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Fowler&fowler«Talk» 23:08, 12 February 2007 (UTC) User talk:Saravask
"Wildlife of India" deserves an article in its own right, "Wildlife of India" is a popular term that people look for and search for on the internet, school kids, nature lovers and people who want to go on nature and eco-tourism trips etc. General people and younger generation looking for Info on Indian wildlife do not look for scientific and little known and boring words like Fauna or Flora or terminology like Protected areas of India etc. All this can be brought together under "Wildlife of India" article by a popular and commonly used and searched name. As per the content of this article: everybody is free to edit and add info on it.
Thanks, sincerely

[edit] India Demographics
Because of India's rich diversity, no one image can represent all of India's one billion people. That is why I propose selecting a new demographics image every three months. This would allow for a regional balance and would show India as a whole. Many people have agreed that this is the only way to represent India's rich and varied diversity. Since you have voted for a change in the demographics section, I wanted to update you on this proposal. I would love to hear your comments on talk:India. Thanks so much. Have a great day!

[edit] Infobox help
Hi Saravask, recently i have been trying to code infoboxes for metros (see Template:Infobox Chennai place) to make use of city maps that i made, with limited success. I wanted to know that if its possible to merge it with Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction by giving an extra parameter like region=Chennai and the template automatically using the chennai map? It could me more effective than creating different infobox for different metros -- PlaneMad|YakYak 11:45, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Need help on Kodaikanal and Silent Valley annual temp/precip bar graph
User:Saravask:
Excellent work on Climate of India! Template:Handshake Award I see it is a Selected article candidate. Should be a Featured article as well.
I have been working on Silent Valley National Park and Palani Hills National Park but hit a wall when I get to Climate sections. Real data for those places seems unavailable.
The closest reference source I've found is:
Shea, D.J., and N.A. Sontakke, 1995: The Annual Cycle of Precipitation over the Indian Subcontinent: Daily, Monthly and Seasonal Statistics. TN-401+IA, National Center for Atmospheric Research, 168 pp.
But now how to get it and then what to do with it? Even if I had the data, I'm graphics challenged.
What I ideally want for those articles is just like the Bar graph for Madras
Can you make these graphs and rewrite the climate sections of these articles or even refer this request to some Wiki weather graphics guru who can/will?
Thank You for any help.-Marcus 07:43, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] infobox
Any updates on the indian infobox? Since im scared of looking at the code, i want to know if a few things can be incorporated:
- by taking a parameter metro=Chennai it automatically uses the chennai city map.
- and type=landmark would give just the map.
- when the locater label is clicked it goes to the geo template.
If you can make at least the map change i can start using the template on Chennai articles -- PlaneMad|YakYak 19:01, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yep, same as clicking the coordinates at the title. Better than that would be to straight away take you to the google map, but that would show the external link icon ([1]) wouldnt it? -- PlaneMad|YakYak 19:26, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Coordinates left= 76.1599 E right= 80.7110 E top= 13.6299 N bottom= 7.9422 N
I actually did it[2]!! just need to superimpose the India thumbnail -- PlaneMad|YakYak 12:44, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
I see ur hard at work with the infobox, great job. Just thought id tell you that theres no point tweaking the default indian map coordinates, the map has a mecrator projection and not equal area. You can never get every place to show up correctly. We just need someone to make the state maps, which is quite a job. Maybe i can make the state outline maps for now and fill in the districts later. Will update you next week -- PlaneMad|YakYak 20:07, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
I know this is making things complicated but how about using for state capitals -- PlaneMad|YakYak 20:12, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

- I used the inset_map_default parameter. Works great. Your recent changes to the IIJ template were pretty cool! Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 20:03, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
Great work on the infobox Saravask. Is it possible to implement the left, right, top , bottom coordinates into one page for easier tweaking? the position on the inset maps can be fixed by giving seperate boundary coordinates for each inset locator map, if you can make provisions for that or make a test page i can supply the coordinates -- PlaneMad|YakYak 07:06, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- Super, ive uploaded kashmir map (see Leh and will upload kerala and goa soon. It would be nice if the inset maps displays by default with a preset position for each state -- PlaneMad|YakYak 18:04, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- Uploaded Goa and kerala, also locator dot on the inset map is not needed by default as the state is already highlighted. coords need tweaking for the two, for some reason they take a while to update on the article, maybe ill do it later. Thanks-- PlaneMad|YakYak 19:09, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks and credits to you for implementing them, will work on punjab over the week. If you can find high res road maps of any other states, pls give me the link -- PlaneMad|YakYak 19:43, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] {{convert}}
Hi there. You've done a cascading-protect of your Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction which has locked me out of editing my own template (well, I can't be possessive, this is a community effort, but I wrote/write and maintain it), {{convert}}. I wasn't even aware of cascading-protection before tonight.. however, if there's a way to exempt {{convert}}, please do it. I've found a minor error (acre doesn't have an s at the end in certain instances, nothing to inhibit functionality) and I can't fix it, and I sure as hell am not going to go through WP:RfA so I can have access to it again. {{convert}} is safe for inclusion without further protecting it, it's already protected from editing by non-users. -- drumguy8800 C T 08:43, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I requested that Alison protect the page and I was able to edit it afterwards.. the reason I knew to contact you about editing {{convert}} was because it explicitly stated something along the lines of .. "This template is locked due to a cascading protect from the following: Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction." Still not too clear on it, though. By the way, it's a very well built infobox. kudos. -- drumguy8800 C T 22:02, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Locator position
Saravask, There seems to be a problem with the locator position parameter on WP:IIJ. It is not placing the caption correctly when it is set to left. Please check Thiruvananthapuram. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 19:40, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for fixing the caption issue. I feel showing the red pog in district articles is not making sense, since we have started to use state locator maps that show a greater detail. For example, Pathanamthitta district should locate the whole of district, not just the headquarters, similar to Calaveras County, California. I was hoping we can find a way to automate it without having to create individual maps for each district. It would be great if SVG's can take a parameter and shade a given area. Just throwing the idea out. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:29, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Multi-lingual support
Saravask, Can you please add multi-lingual support to WP:IIJ, so that it can be easily ported to other language wikis? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:51, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry I was not clear the first time. I was looking for place-holders (similar to sub-pages of the template for types) for captions. When other language wikis copy this template, they would go to this sub-page to fill-in translation for different terms (area, district, city etc) and the template will use the translations to display on the article page. The template is too complicated for others to go through it and translate terms. I had moved this template to Tamil wiki sometime back, but had changed all the captions on the template itself. If I have to move the recent changes to Tamil wiki, I have to first translate all the captions and then move it. It would be lot of easier if the template read the translations from a sub-page, updates from then on will simply be copy and paste, except when there are new captions that require new translation. Please let me know if I need to explain further. English wiki need not go to this sub-page, I wanted the feature when the template is used on other wikis (Like a namespace check condition). Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 04:43, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
Rather than doing the translations ourselves, we should leave that to regional wikis. I feel {{Infobox Indian Jurisdiction/translations2}} will do. It provides the captions for each field. In tamil wiki, that would contain the tamil words. For example, {{Infobox Indian Jurisdiction/translations2/tamil}}. I think this is how MediaWiki handles it. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 19:36, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- It looks good! We still need the interface template to handle the parameter names. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:58, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] IE display problems
I made a slightly tacky quickfix.. now there's either a 1px white line on top or bottom, depending on the size and the browser. I thought there was a provision in wikisyntax for images that let you add the browser directly to the image tag.. but I was wrong. Side note.. isn't it annoying editing templates? you have to save too freaking much and purge your cache every single time. Anyway, if you don't get it fixed I'll take a look at it again later tonight.. however I'm off to see a friend. cheers. -- drumguy8800 C T 21:47, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- The only perfect fix I can think of is a 9-square solution, (3x3) with the center square
background:transparent
overlaying the map and the top, bottom, left, and right having 1px borders on the bottom, top, right, and left respectively.. which would all overlay the map. A little complicated ;) -- drumguy8800 C T 22:28, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

- Hello Saravask. The "leader title" and "leader name" parameters are messed up in the template. "leader 1" is applied "title 2" and vice versa. [edit] Delhi map
Dont ask me why or how. This problem is affecting so many of my maps. It shows up fine then all of a sudden, without the slighest warning, gives a blank. I find that a surefire way (well almost) to fix it is to try different thumbnail directories in the image's url. In this case the directory is a/a5 . Try different combinations till it renders, then reload the original thumb. Hope i didnt confuse you -- PlaneMad|YakYak 17:20, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- The way i understand it, the thumbnails once generated are stored at that url. So anyone requesting that size gets the stored thumbnail. So hopefully once it displays for a particular size, it shall remain until the cache is purged -- PlaneMad|YakYak 17:30, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- To fix it, paste the corrupt thumbnail url in your address bar, for delhi "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a5/Delhi_area_locator_map.svg/225px-Delhi_area_locator_map.svg.png" play around with a/a5 like a/a1 , a/a2 , b/a1 etc.. to force it to rasterise, once it displays, try the reloading with original url and its should display -- PlaneMad|YakYak 17:35, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Easy multi locator maps
The past week ive been trying to implement an idea ive had for a while, to make clickable route maps for highways. My intention was to make it simple to create and thanks to help from User:Ganeshk who helped with a coordinate database, ive had limited success. You can see the template i made at {{IN}}. I now require your help (since i cant find anyone else who enjoys playing with this sort of code) to clean up the template and take more parameters. Theres no hurry on this, its sort of an experiment at the moment -- PlaneMad|YakYak 18:29, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Auto categorization
I was thinking auto-categorization may not be a good idea. When state categories grow large, people create sub-categories at the district level. The cities will end up having the state-cat populated from the template. For example, Machilipatnam. Could you please give this some thought. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 01:28, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- No problem. May be at some point we could auto-cat them into district-level cats. The language interface looks great! I will start testing it with Tamil. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 06:12, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

- Ok, i thought it was something at my end. The same thing happened whith the multi locator template i made. Grand Southern Trunk Road is taking the same time to load as any other place with IIJ. Maybe a common problem? -- PlaneMad|YakYak 18:00, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

- Punjab is a disambig page, so dont replace Punjab (India). I think an easier option is just reupload the punjab map to Image:Punjab (India) locator map.svg -- PlaneMad|YakYak 18:11, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] IE display problem
Saravask, Can you please check why this happens? See Bharuch. I am using IE 6. When a picture is added right under the infobox, it creates a lot of empty space. The only way to fix it is to put the infobox and the picture into a table or move the picture a few sections down. Is this something that can be fixed on the infobox. [edit] Re. Kochi article name
Yes, I think you should go ahead with the move.--thunderboltz(TALK) 12:01, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- I think it should be Kochi, India. State is added when two cities have the same name inside India. District is added when two cities inside a state have the same name etc. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 20:32, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- In Hyderabad's case, there was a Hyderabad, Uttar Pradesh. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 20:34, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- I disagree. Like you said, in those 650,000 towns, there is a high chance you will have two towns with the same name in the same state. So it will be good to have a convention for the disambugation alone. And not force a single dab style on all towns. Moving articles is not that that difficult as need arises. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:19, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- For example, there are 3 Gudalurs in Tamil Nadu. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:25, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- Well, since there is a varied opinion, I think we should discuss this at WT:INB. I agreed for the move because there didn't seem to be any city article that has the "City (Country)" format. Most of the cities indeed choose the "City (State)" style. But the former does make sense when you consider that there is a Kochi in Japan as well. A discussion would certainly help, as there doesn't seem to be a general consensus at Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(city_names)#India either.--thunderboltz(TALK) 06:39, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kaziranga
Saravask, I was going to propose we use Assam locator map on the Kaziranga National Park article. Do you think it is a good idea? I created a sandbox page to test. I am not able to get the coords set properly. Could you please check what went wrong? Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 07:32, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- Please read this discussion where I got a positive response for this. I was thinking whether we should add a new type, "park" or "protected" to WP:IIJ. We already have the inset map functionality and others on the IIJ template. The Protected area infobox is not too complicated. We will have to add the following new fields, IUCN category, Location, Nearest city, Established, Total Visitation and year and Governing body to the IIJ template. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 07:31, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
-
-
- I don't think these fields will burden the template. Many fields like area, state etc are common in these templates. It will reduce a lot of maintenance effort if we put these in one template. Please take a look at Template:Infobox City. IIJ has used up only half the total number number of fields on that template. I was thinking we could also add "type=region" for use in articles like Ladakh. Please read this. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 20:33, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

So where are we now? Back to square one, eh? I think we should open a new discussion. Nobody was interested in the previous one, so this time it'll be in the form of a proposal. We'll ask for comments and !votes on City, Country and City, State formats, and fix whatever the outcome as the de facto India WikiProject norm. It is high time we did something like this as Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(city_names)#India remains a draft proposal, lacking any established consensus. [edit] Ladakh map
Hey Saravask, the map you made for Ladakh looks awesome. However, unlike the previous map, it shows only the portions of the region under Indian administration. The article is about the region as a whole. The disclaimer (see Note α in the article) still explains the colors differentiating between the region under Indian administration, and the region traditionally described as Ladakh. It would be great if, using the previous map, you could come up with some scheme showing both the Ladakh region and the region currently under Indian administration (portions of the districts of Leh and Kargil that really are on the Indian side of Line of Control and Line of Actual Control). deeptrivia (talk) 22:35, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] IIJ issues
Hi Saravask, just few things i wanted to bring to your notice.
- When type=suburb, it does not automatically categorize it under cities and town, but only as a suburb. normally suburbs are towns outside city limits with its own panchayat/municipality, so it needs to be categorised as a town also.
- The civic_agency parameter does not seem to show. see Palayamkottai
- Categorisation of articles without coordinates by state. Its easier to add coordinates of nearby places than randomly all over the country.
Thats it for now, thanks -- PlaneMad|YakYak 07:14, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Links to Division
Some of your otherwise helpful edits to the India templates have caused a bit of collateral damage. Edits like this one have created over 6000 ambiguous links to the Division disambiguation page - about four times more than to any other dab page on Wikipedia. I'd change them to link to either Division (country subdivision) or Divisions of India, but I noticed you've protected the page, so I don't want to step on your toes. I don't want to create a syntax problem, either. Would you mind altering those links to solve the problem? Dekimasuよ! 23:41, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Kodagu
Hello. Why did you move Kodagu to 'Kodagu district'? There is no other Kodagu article, and in accordance with common usage and naming policy, it should remain as Kodagu. Imc 08:02, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
- I recently did the same with Birbhum district (making Birbhum a redirect). The current policy applies the "x district" convention only when there is need for disambiguation. But I feel the convention should apply to all districts for consistency purposes. I am waiting for Nichalp to comment about the same at [4]. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 19:18, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:India Punjab (India) locator map.svg, by Closedmouth (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:India Punjab (India) locator map.svg fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:India Punjab (India) locator map.svg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:India Punjab (India) locator map.svg itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 10:06, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks!!
Hi Saravask, I only just saw the barnstar! (Not sure why I missed it; I was about to read my talk page yesterday morning, and then got side-tracked by something, and never got back.) It was very timely (the right kind of encouragement at the right time) and very well expressed (only to be expected from you). A much needed shot in the arm. Thanks again! I updated the above map to change Uttaranchal -> Uttarakhand and Pondicherry -> Puducherry. Please take a look and see if you are ok with these modifications. If so, I can also go through some commonly used Wikiproject India Maps and replicate these changes. Abecedare 02:57, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] user:Hindutashravi 3RR violation on Hindutash
Hi Saravask,
Sorry to bother you, but have you come across this dude? user:Hindutashravi, who seems like a POV-pusing new user, is claiming that parts of southwestern Xinjiang are in fact parts of Ladakh and Kashmir according to a discredited (even in the 1870s) claim, is edit-warring on that page. I first noticed that page about a week ago, made a post both on his talk page and on the India-related notice board. I then edited it using sold sources and maps. He insists on reverting to his version, which among other things is (a) a copy vio, (b) is completely inaccurate in its history, (c) is poorly written, and (d) is inaccurate in its geography. He has now violated a the 3RR rule, claiming that he has added a few things, but I don't see any additions. His only source is Gazetteer of Kashimr" with no publisher, date etc. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 20:00, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks!
Thanks for the barnstar. The ideas for the {{WP India}} template actually came from the Australian and Military History projects who started the assessment departments in a big way. All credit should go to them and Version 1.0 Editorial Team for making this possible. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:38, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Tagore
I think British Raj along with the flag of British Raj is true to history and verifiable. Neither India or Bangladesh didn't exist as a country at the time Tagore lived and died. --Ragib 20:24, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
- Bengali isn't a nationality, it is an ethnicity. Tagore was born in the British Raj, and also died there. From 1858 onwards, the British Raj was directly ruled by Britain. If you see Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar's talk page, you'd see a passport of British Raj nationals. --Ragib 20:30, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

You blocked 68.112.229.173 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · block user · block log) for one week, which is fine except that that IP address belongs to Charter Communications, which assigns IP addresses dynamically to its dialup customers, and you disallowed account creation. Please consider altering the block so that account creation is allowed from that address. Kurt Weber 23:53, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kaziranga for FA
I have decided to be bold and have taken the article to FAC. See Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Kaziranga National Park. Aditya Kabir 15:51, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, dear, for correcting me. That was an enormous error. I mean, not including it on the FA page. Sigh. For the other suggestion, all I can say is that I did notify both Nichalp and Dwaipayan about the nomination on the very day I notified you, along with Amartya and Pradipta. Nirav or Rama's Arrow has left WP, so I didn't notify him (one of his last big contributions was getting Bengali Language Movement to FA status). Even if yu don't feel comfortable doing an FA review, please, stick around to help iron out the issues that may come up in the reviews. You have already contributed enormously to the article, and it couldn't possibly be done without you. Cheers. Aditya(talk • contribs) 04:00, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Barrioadentro1.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Barrioadentro1.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rlest 12:04, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:JUN_ALO226_DSC_6415.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:JUN_ALO226_DSC_6415.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 19:47, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Urgent: India page
Hi Saravask, Since you are one of the people who made substantial comments in the last RfC we had on the Talk:India page concerning addition of new material (see here), I thought I would get your opinion about a new development. Yesterday, out of the blue, Blnguyen, who has no history of editing on the India page, made a post on the page suggesting that the India page be expanded to twice its size, which needless to say, has created a lot of confusion. Please see this section of the talk page there. As a result, User:Sarvagnya, for example, has returned to his scheme for de-constructing the India page. (By way of background: Nichalp, who usually watched over the article is busy this summer; Ragib, who was subbing for Nichalp is busy too. Blnguyen seems to think that the page is in bad shape and is about to be de-FA'd. He feels that it needs many more citations (and their lack) is reason enough for it to fail an FAR. Nichalp, when he was active, discouraged over-crowding the text with too many citations (especially when the text was composed in the summary-style, as India is). I think Blnguyen has some valid points: the page needs more (and certainly better) citations and the prose (especially of some new sections that were created by other people) needs revamping, but I think you might be in a better position to assess Blnguyen's idea of expanding the article to twice its size.) Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 12:01, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- I've just read enough of Talk:India to get the gist. It is revolting to wade through vast slabs of text, much of it repetitious. Brief and definitive arguments should be the aim. Saravask 22:05, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

More substantively, then, I believe that the page is utter nonsense as it stands. If you can provide support for it, fine, but otherwise, I believe it to be wrong, except for the definition of the greek words. DCDuring 22:01, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:PresidenteDiosdadoCabello.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:PresidenteDiosdadoCabello.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

[edit] Great work

[edit] {{image file}}
Hi Saravask, I believe your template is working beautifully. I've got to see some really(and equally) beautiful pictures of wildlife in the last few days. The more I think of it, the more the idea(of rotation) strikes me as wise. Not only does it help us do away with pointless and inane discussions on the talk page, but more importantly, I feel that helps us reflect fairly and encyclopedically the oft-repeated 'Unity in diversity' that is supposed to be at the heart of India as a country. I feel we should now start adding a few more pictures to the list of "Flora and fauna" images we already have and keep the flora and fauna experiment running for a few more days before we move to other sections. I have a few more thoughts on this and will post my comments on the India talk page over the weekend. Apologize for the delay in replying. Have been tied up with RL these days. Sarvagnya 02:45, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Carmonaestanga.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Carmonaestanga.jpg.
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 20:24, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 15:16, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
