This is total trivia, however: I remember reading that the sartorius used to also be known als the "Custos virginum", the "Protector of Virginity" because of the way it helps the legs to cross. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any reference to this on the Web except for a German article http://www.m-press.rmc.de/Experten/Z701/Position.html of questionable repute where it is mentioned in passing.
