Talk:Sarajevo school of pop rock

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In my book, "Sarajevo School" does not denote everything that comes from Sarajevo. I think that Zabranjeno pusenje and New Primitives came exactly as a counter-reaction to "Sarajevo School" of melodic pop/glam rock and putting them in the same basket is unfair, to put it mildly. So, the roots of "Sarajevo School" (as I perceive it) come from Indexi, with Bijelo Dugme as the basement (esp. later period), and Crvena Jabuka, Plavi Orkestar, Merlin, Hari Mata Hari, Bolero etc. as the real protagonists. “Sarajevo school of pop rock” is a literal translation of the local term and as such sounds clumsy and cryptic in English. Considering this is an encyclopedia, something like “Pop rock scene in Sarajevo” would be a lot more appropriate. Additionally, the term “Sarajevo school of pop-rock” was very seldom used until late 1990s and even then it was primarily used in nostalgia context rather than as precise term denoting a common musical scene. Majority of these performers have very little in common musically and image wise. Shouldn’t they have at least something else in common other then their town of birth to be considered parts of a common scene? I mean, if we’re lumping in Zabranjeno pusenje, Crvena jabuka, Bijelo dugme and Merlin together, why not take the absurdity to the very end and throw in Zdravko Colic and Kemal Monteno as well? They're popular, they're from Sarajevo, and they're pop performers.Zvonko 08:03, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

the new wave music was closely related to punk, the terms were even interchangeable during a certain period. Take for example Paraf who sang "Moj zivot je Novi Val" while they were still a straightforward punk rock band (Novi Punk Val period). Pekinska Patka also made refferences to the New Wave in their songs. the book Punk in Yugoslavia says that Crvena Jabuka, Bombaj Stampa, Pusenje and others started as punk rock bands: Ozbiljno Pitanje, Sheva and others. that could mean new wave, anyway. Even Plavi Orkestar who turned to teenage pop later also had certain 'punkish' attitude (by the way they were managed managed by the bosnian version of Malcolm MClaren - Muharem MCLaren). because of these reasons i added punk rock as an influence to the younger generations beside the new wave.
