Saraikistan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saraikistan (Urdu: سراییکستان ) is a southern region of the Punjab province of Pakistan, inhabited by Saraiki-speaking people. The Saraiki nationalist movement endeavours to separate the Saraiki-speaking region off as a new province to be known as Saraikistan. The Saraiki region is bordered by Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan provinces.

Saraiki[1] (or Seraiki) is an old language or dialect mostly spoken in central Pakistan by approximately 30 million people.[2] At the last census, the speakers of Saraiki formed approximately 20% of the population of Pakistan.[1] It is an Indo-European language of the Indo-Iranian subfamily. Saraiki shows resemblance to both Sindhi and Punjabi languages. It is widely spoken and understood as a second language in northern and western Sindh down to the suburbs of Karachi and in the Kachhi plain of Balochistan. It is also known as Derawali in the neighbouring Derajat area. The word Saraiki comes from the Sindhi word Siro for North, as Saraiki is spoken to the north of Sindh.
