Sarah Onyango Obama is the paternal step-grandmother of Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama. She lives in Kogela village, 40 miles north of western Kenya's main town, Kisumu, on the edge of Lake Victoria.[1] Her small farmhouse has no running water.[2]
Sarah Obama was the third wife of Obama's paternal grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama. Although not a blood relation, Barack Obama nevertheless calls her "Mama Sarah", since she had a major role in raising his father.[3] She was just 16 when she married Obama's grandfather, an older man who was her father's friend.[2]
Despite living in a small rural village in Kenya, Sarah Obama is well aware of Senator Obama's fame in the United States, and has photographs of his successes on her walls. [4] She recently publicly complained about false reports that Senator Obama is a Muslim. She says that he is a Christian, just as she is.[5] She has been frequently interviewed by the European press, such as in this clip taken in her home,[6] and she is closely following the political campaign.[7]
