Sarah J. Tracy (Ph.D., University of Colorado-Boulder, 2000) is associate professor in The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication. She is a director of the Project for Wellness and Work-Life (PWWL). Her principal research interest is organizational communication and her scholarly work focuses upon emotion and work-life wellness issues within organizations, particularly bullying in the workplace, burnout, stress and "emotion labor"--considered to be the construction of an organizationally-specified facial or bodily display of emotion. Her ethnographic field research has focused upon correctional officers, 911 emergency call-takers, cruise ship employees and the targets of workplace bullying.
She is coauthor of the book Leading Organizations Through Transition: Communication and Cultural Change and her work has appeared in Communication Monographs, Management Communication Quarterly, Communication Theory; Human Communication Research, Qualitative Inquiry, Journal of Applied Communication Research and The Western Journal of Communication. She has earned awards for both her research and teaching, and regularly teaches organizational communication, qualitative methods, conflict & negotiation, and work-life wellness.
In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Tracy is active in the community as a member of P.E.O. International (http://www.peointernational.org/) and a coach for Girls on the Run (http://www.gotrmc.org/). She is also an active triathlete.
