Sarah Dessen (born June 6, 1970) is an American writer for young adults, who lives and teaches in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Dessen was born in Evanston, Illinois but was raised in North Carolina.[citation needed] Both of her parents were professors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which Dessen later attended from 1988 to 1993, graduating with a degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing.[citation needed] Prior to UNC, Dessen graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1988.[citation needed] After college, she continued waiting tables at the Flying Burrito and writing, and she sold her first book, That Summer, three years after she graduated.[citation needed] Since then, her seven books have won many awards.[vague] On April 10, 2007, she announced on her blog that she was pregnant with her first child. Her daughter Sasha Clementine was born on September 2, 2007.[citation needed]
Two of her novels, That Summer and Someone Like You, were the basis for How to Deal, a 2003 movie starring Mandy Moore.[citation needed] Her most recent novel Just Listen was released in April 2006 and subsequently reached number two on the New York Times Book Review.[citation needed] She just recently finished her eighth book, Lock and Key, which was released on April 22, 2008.[citation needed]
