[edit] Character history

[edit] Swimming and rebellion

Defying her mum Kathy’s wish for her to become an Olympic swimmer, Sarah enjoyed spending her time socialising and mixing with the opposite sex. A romance with best friend Hannah's older brother Rhys resurfaced after a brief flirtation when they first met. Her mother was horrified at this and vowed to stop Rhys from seeing her eldest daughter no matter what. Unfortunately, part of her campaign to split them up involved sleeping with Rhys which, when Sarah found out, caused their mother/daughter relationship to crumble, and Sarah to end her relationship with Rhys. Also, in revenge, Sarah deliberately failed her chance in a swimming trial, in order to "teach her to stay out of her life".

[edit] Exposed

Sarah forgave Rhys, much to Kathy's annoyance, on the premise that the fling will never be mentioned again, so her father Mike would never have to find out. During this part of their relationship, Rhys talked Sarah into having some nude photographs taken, which he later showed his mates in a bar. When she found out, she was incensed and dumped him. She then became closer to Rhys' best friend Gilly Roach, though her heart was never truly in this particular relationship.

In the midst of Sarah's breakup with Rhys and dates with Gilly, Kathy had a birthday party, during which Gilly and Rhys had a heated argument about Sarah. The argument ended in Gilly letting slip about Rhys and Kathy's fling. As a result, Mike, shocked that Sarah had known about the fling, chucked Kathy out of the family home. but later left himself, to live in the Nicole Owen's family's old flat. Sarah later joined Mike in the flat after walking out on her mother and her younger sister Amy. Amy later moved in with her father and sister, and after some time, Mike allowed Kathy to join them.

[edit] Craig and John Paul

Sarah and her best friend Hannah struck up a friendship with friends Craig Dean and John Paul McQueen. Sarah and Craig, who were dating, tried to set Hannah up with John Paul. They were successful, but the relationship was short lived due to John Paul's confusion over his sexuality. Craig and Sarah broke up several times, including an occasion where he caught her drunkenly kissing Rhys at Hannah's 18th birthday party. After she apologised, he hastily took her back. John Paul was actually caught kissing Craig at a school party by Hannah, which led to him coming out. Craig insisted he was straight and John Paul had forced the kiss, and Sarah believed him.

In spite of knowing John Paul's feelings for Craig, Sarah saw John Paul as a friend and encouraged him in his first relationship with Spike. She also encouraged him to repair his friendship with Craig, not realising this would lead to Craig and John Paul becoming lovers in May 2007. After their first time, Craig was left in such a state that he tried to force himself on Sarah and called her a whore. She once again accepted his apology.

[edit] Baby Leah and war with the Ashworths

In February, Sarah delivered her niece Leah when her then fifteen-year-old sister Amy gave birth on the kitchen floor. Sarah has since been trying to persuade Amy to care for her own baby, instead of letting their mum take over, at first she couldn't seem to get through to her.

After several arguments about her younger sister's relationship with Josh Ashworth, her dad, Mike, was hit in the head with a brick by Josh during a fight. Sarah and Amy were heartbroken when they found out what had happened to their father. The sisters were overjoyed when Mike woke up. Familial arguments once Mike was back to health, however, caused Amy to run away. She called Sarah for financial support, but Sarah decided it would be best to notify the police of Josh's whereabouts, and take Mike in order to bring Amy home. After Amy returned home, she realised how much she loved her baby, and began to take more care of her.

[edit] Kathy gone crazy

Amy's increased role in Leah's life caused Kathy to become deluded, believing Leah to be her child, and seeing her as a way to start again, as she had become depressed that her two girls had grown up so suddenly. Kathy kidnapped Leah and had to be sent away for mental treatment.

[edit] Being a model and Craig's secret

Sarah did some photoshoots for a fictional magazine named Ripple, following the photographs Rhys took of her in the nude being sent in to them. Sarah delved further into the world of modeling, in spite of boyfriend Craig's initial anger over her career. Sarah often turned to John Paul for advise, having no idea he was secretly sleeping with Craig. After promising John Paul that he would end things with Sarah and come out as his boyfriend, Craig hastily left with Sarah for a holiday in Zante. When Sarah returned from her holiday in Zante, she found out while sitting in the Dog Pub that the secret about Leah was no longer a secret as Amy's friend Michaela McQueen sold the story to a magazine. In the midst of this chaos, she began to become suspicious of Craig's behaviour, but he proposed to her. They planned to move to Dublin for Craig's education.

After the proposal, Frankie et al decided to host an engagement party at The Dog, John Paul, who was unaware of the engagement, was heartbroken, and asked Craig to prove his love for him. Craig heard someone (Frankie) and went to check; during this time he left his phone with John Paul. John Paul, wanting Sarah to find out the truth once and for all, sent a text message pretending to be Craig asking her to come up to Craig's room. Craig returned and he and John Paul continued to make out passionately; Sarah arrived into the room and was shocked and horrified. She told everyone at the party about what Craig and John Paul had been doing.

After some time to think, she asked Craig to take her back, assuming he was just confused. He said although he loves her, he owe her the truth and that was that he would rather be with John Paul. Craig soon left for Dublin alone and Sarah made little secret of her belief that John Paul had "turned" her boyfriend gay. Their friendship was permanently destroyed.

[edit] Hannah's anorexia and bulimia

Sarah also tried to help her friend Hannah cope with bulimia and anorexia. Sarah blamed John Paul for Hannah's problems, although Sarah's career as a model and her modeling friend Melissa Hurst (who encouraged Hannah's eating disorder and later died of a heart attack brought on by her own disorder) were also factors in Hannah's illness.

[edit] Back from London and family problems

Mike asked Sarah to look after Amy and Leah when he went to visit Kathy, but Sarah had a modeling trip In London and without Mike knowing, she left Amy and Leah alone. When Mike came back with Kathy, he found out that Sarah went to London, and also found out about Amy and Ste. After a few arguments Amy moved out with Leah to live with Ste. Amy stayed in contact with Sarah, but this led to Ste's abusive stepfather Terry going with her and Mike to see them and beating Ste up. Matters were made even worse when Kathy found out Ste had drugs at their flat and called Social Services, costing them their council flat. Amy temporarily cut off all contact with her sister and the rest of the family.

[edit] Rhys rekindled

When Sarah found out Craig was with John Paul, Rhys had been a shoulder to cry on and seemed interested in picking up their relationship again. At the time, Sarah wasn't ready, but a few months later, they began dating. What Sarah did not realize was that in the interim, Rhys had developed deep feelings for his newfound half-sister, Beth Clements, and was mostly dating Sarah to try to move on from Beth. When Kathy found out Sarah was with Rhys again, she was outraged. After confiding in Beth that Rhys did not seem to have strong feelings for her, Beth advised Sarah to let him know. When Rhys gave her a ring as a Christmas present, Sarah decided to break it off with him, as she didn't care enough to want a serious relationship with him.

[edit] Zoe

Sarah also befriended Zoe Carpenter and Zoe moved into the Barnes home when she needed a place to stay, which led Kathy's health condition in a critical state as she assumed and accused both Zoe and Mike for having an affair. This led Mike to break-up with Kathy. It wasn't before long that Mike confessed his feelings for Zoe. Zoe accepted his confession and stayed with the Barnes.

As soon as Sarah found out about Zoe's affair with her father, she immediately dropped her as her friend and subjected her to many moments of verbal abuse. She asked her father to choose, and he chose Zoe, causing Sarah to move in with Nancy and Russ.

[edit] Elliot and Roger

As she struggled with her father's new girlfriend and with finding out her niece had leukemia (a lie, but only Ste and Amy knew the truth), Sarah found a supporter in Elliot Bevan. He cared deeply for her, but she saw him only as a friend. When Elliot's physics lecturer, Roger Kiddle, met Sarah, he treated her contemptuously but felt a strong attraction for her. Sarah fell for his charms and began sleeping with him, even going so far as to use Elliot's bed. Elliot walked in on them, one of the factors contributing to his nervous breakdown. Elliot was initially furious with Sarah and threatened to report her to the dean, but after a few months, they made peace.

Sarah quickly cooled on Roger when she learned he was (unhappily) married, but took him out on a few more dates because she liked the idea of making her father look like a hypocrite for objecting to a relationship with a large age difference. Sarah dumped Roger for good when she learned he'd made a pass at Zoe.
