Sara Genn

Sara Genn (b. May 27, 1972 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a Canadian-born artist living in New York City. She works primarily in oil on canvas but has also worked in printmaking, pastel, watercolour, acrylic, paper, video and soft sculpture media. Genn's work is exhibited across Canada and the United States and has garnered collectors worldwide. Genn attended York House School in Vancouver and graduated with a BFA from Queen's University at Kingston. Genn has been showing her work professionally since the age of 18, and sold out her first solo exhibition at the age of 19.

Genn is best known for her exhaustive use of colour and patterning, and repetition of motifs in her paintings. Her work often blurs the line between high art and craft and references other artforms such as quiltmaking and textile design. In addition to her representation by commercial galleries in Canada and the United States, Genn's work has exhibited at Artist's Space in New York City, The AAF Contemporary Art Fair NY, has been featured in Elle Canada, Canadian Living, Tatler, Vogue, and used by the Toronto Arts Council and Nissan Infiniti. In 2001 Genn was made a United Way Special Achiever for her charitable contributions the organization. Genn also works regularly with The Steelhead Society, Big Sisters, Art For Life and Fashion Cares.

In 1998 and 1999 Genn lived in France and Spain and kept an illustrated diary that she published online as one of the Internet's first travelogues. Saraphina Mosey was honoured by Yahoo and Writer's Digest and exists today as one of the most-read travelogues online.

In 2002 Genn travelled by boat, the length of the MacKenzie River in Canada's Northwest Territories and painted the Canadian landscape for the first time. Her father is Canadian landscape painter Robert Genn.

Genn also fronts a music project called nom de plume. Songs For Longing was released in 2007.

Genn is the sister of Dave Genn, Juno award-winning guitarist and producer, who currently plays with the Canadian rock band 54-40. She is also the twin sister of James Genn, a filmmaker, who has directed for CTV, CBC and Bravo. His writing and directing credits also include short films Direct Lines, Second Date and Dogwalker, the last of which he wrote and directed through the Alliance Atlantis Canadian Film Center.
