[edit] Plot
The game begins when Green Town is attacked by the Tan army and Sarge battling through the war torn city killing Tan Spotters and APCs to save Green Town. After the battle is over Sarge is informed by Colonel Grimm that the Tan Army has surrendered and that there will be a peace ceremony later that night, but there is a rogue army that has stolen some army men infantry moulds and can now build an army which is lead by a Lord Malice. Sarge's mission is to find and terminate Malice as well as find a missing squad that has already been sent.
Sarge arrives in the area a (beach) and battles his way through until he reaches the Tan portal and destroys some Tan ammo trucks. Then he finds plans saying that there is a bomb at the peace ceremony which is where Plastro, Colonel Grimm, the heroes, and a battalion of Green Army men are located. Then he is contacted by Lord Malice who tells him that the bomb is in the peace statue and that he can't wait to see Sarge's face as his squad is incinerated before his eyes. Sarge charges through the portal to stop the ceremony but he is too late. His entire squad as well as Greentown and the Green Army Battalion have been destroyed. Contrary to popular belief, the entire Green Army was not destroyed in the explosion, in fact, Sarge comes across several Green Army squads who help him along the way. However, Sarge will fight the Tan for the most part alone. He then sets out to kill Malice.
He battles his way through the remains of Greentown to the portal in which the Tans launched the attack from at the beginning of the game. When he is through the portal he finds himself in Malice's artillery base. Sarge destroys all the artillery and discovers a plastic well mine that malice found and is using to build his army. Sarge floods the mine making it nearly unusable and then walks across the desert until he finds the castle. Malice is using the castle as a communication center for his air force and ground forces as well as a prison base for some of the green army's finest men. Sarge charges into the castle and frees the prisoners and destroys the communications tower. He also destroys a loading facility where he discovers a passageway from the Castle into a kitchen, which is a passage to Malice's base. While he is in the kitchen, Sarge has a flashback of a time when he was younger. A man named Major Gooding leads a squad of Green army men, with Sarge in it. Sarge goes the other way on the kitchen counter while Gooding advances. Gooding is then ambushed by Tan forces. Sarge runs over to see Gooding's arm near the sink, which leads him to the conclusion that Gooding is dead. Sarge calls for extraction saying, "Bravo to dango Bravo to Dango we need heat down here fast! Grid Square, Foxtrot 3! We can't hold out much longer !" into the radio. The flashback ends, and Sarge moves forth.
At the end of the game, Sarge finally reaches Col. Malice's headquarters, where he must battle Malice. He fatally wounds Malice. Sarge asks Malice why he killed the Green and Tan in Green Town and he tells him it was to make him suffer. Sarge takes Malice's face mask off, and Malice was actually Major Gooding, who was accidentally left for dead. It turned out that Gooding had taken 3 shots, one of them blowing off his arm, and one knocking him into the sink. Eventually the Tan found him, and fixed him. At the end of that scene, Sarge is seen walking out, saying how war makes no sense and is confusing. This last part shows a curtain, getting blown away and several tubes are lined up next to each over, with Col. Grimm, Vikki and the rest of the heroes' names inscribed on them. This hints that maybe the heroes and Col. Grimm along with Vikki actually didn't die at all, and in fact maybe Malice had just made copies of them and played on Sarge's emotions.
[edit] Enemies
Malice's army was made of just rogue tan infantry at first but swell to a much larger size as Malice's operations continued. Here is a list of units in his army.
Grunt: This foe is weak and has just plain tan on. They usually use carbines and are met in large numbers in early parts of the game.
Shotgunner:This foe has some red on and usually uses only a shotgun but during different parts of the game they do use assault rifles as well.
Grenadier: This unit is distinctive because of their blue breast plate and more muscular build. Contrary to their name most of these units used automatic rifles rather than grenades. When they do use grenades they throw them from a distance until Sarge gets close when they whip out a shotgun.
Spotters/Snipers:These foes wear blue coats and boonie hats. The spotters usually only have carbine rifles but later in the game begin using sniper rifles. Though they can call in air strikes and artillery strikes which makes them quite dangerous. The snipers lie in wait in high elevation like towers and can be very effective if you meet them in an open area.
Special Forces: The Elite of the tan, these units are tougher than most other units. They are noticeable because of wearing blue stripes and having blue British style hats. They use bazookas and flame throwers most of the time but their weakness is flame thrower which can kill them nearly instantly. They command the other units and have a higher rank.
Stealth Special Forces: While these foes aren't actually commanders they are dressed like them and use HMG's except that they are invisible. Very few exist because Sarge destroyed the machine that made them before they went into mass production.
Lord Malice: The ultimate commander of the rogue Tan forces. Malice Join In Malice On Sarge's War In the Scholl Shooting game he has a bazooka mounted on his arm and never runs out of shells. His weakness is the HMG, Sniper gun, and bazooka. Very Tough, ENJOY THE GAME!!!
[edit] Weapons
A variety of weapons are featured in Sarge's War. The list below details some of them.
- Carbine - The carbine never runs out of ammunition and is used primarily at the beginning of the game.
- Assault Rifle - This assault rifle has a faster rate of fire than the carbine while dealing more damage.
- Shotgun - This shotgun is designed for close range combat, firing a cone shaped spray of pellets at the enemy and dealing massive damage. Capable of blowing holes through enemies. Its accuracy is severely reduced from longer distances.
- Automatic Rifle - An upgraded version of the assault rifle, it is smaller and features full automatic fire.
- Grenade - Up to nine grenades can be carried at a time. The grenades explode a few seconds after touching the ground.
- Bazooka - The bazooka is used primarily for taking out tanks and APCs. It carries a small amount of ammunition but deals very heavy damage, including splash damage around its target.
- Sniper Rifle - The sniper rifle is a weapon used for picking off targets from long distances. The rifle also includes a scope to zoom in on targets.
- Flamethrower - The flamethrower carries a large amount of ammunition. It sprays fire, covering a large area. After exposure to the flame, the enemy will melt. Can destroy everything except tanks and helicopters. The flamethrower is the only weapon that can kill an Invisible Green Eater.
- HMG (Heavy machine gun) - The HMG is one of the most powerful weapons in the game. It is fully automatic and can fire 100 rounds before reloading is required.
- Blasting Cap - A cylinder filled with explosive. It will explode three seconds after the fuse is lit.
- Mounted HMG - This is a mounted version of the HMG. It has unlimited ammunition.
- Time Bomb - If you plant one of these in front of an obstruction, after 3 seconds, it will explode. Much more common than Blasting Caps.
[edit] Vehicles
Sarge's War also features several vehicles that are used by the Tan Army.
- Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) - These look like like tanks but have a single turret on them. They are easily defeated with grenades or other explosives but carry multiple enemy soldiers, usually three. The APC can be destroyed with one grenade explosion or one well-placed rocket to the turret. They are the only vehicle that can be destroyed using the flamethrower.
- Tank - The tank poses a great danger to the player. It can be destroyed using the bazooka or with two grenades.
- Helicopters - Helicopters will occasionally show up during certain events, and are very difficult to destroy. They are equipped with a machine gun and rockets, making them very dangerous. They can be destroyed by the use of rockets or the HMG.
[edit] Reception
The game was generally rated as an average game or below average. It did improve on the old games though with a new lock on feature as well as the feature of blowing off enemy limbs. Most reviews said that the darker appearance was nice as well as having Sarge become more of an anti hero. Though most reviewers also said that the graphics were sub par, it was repetitive and the enemy AI was poor.
Game Rankings Rating was 5/10,Gamespot rated it 5.1/10 and Game Informer rated it 5/10. There were, however, instances where a few players gave the game a higher rating, arguing how although the game fell short in over all quality, that Sarge's War had the best story line out of all the Army Men games.
