Is there any rational behind the moving of major Japanese cities such as this to {name}, {prefecture name}? It's not as if they're obscure and easily mistaken, and London, Berlin etc. seem to survive perfectly well on their own Ianb 16:26, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Basically for the sake of consistency. We are about to add more towns and villages in the future, and many names of cities need to be suffixed with a prefecture name to avoid a confict. At 16:19 on 9 Mar 2005 204.184.16.85 (talk · contributions) removed the following items from the list of ten wards, leaving eight wards.

• Teine-ku
• Toyohira-ku

I'm in the process of tracking and cleaning up vandalism performed by this user. I'll return the missing wards but would appreciate if someone could check them for me. I know nothing about this Japanese city except the beer. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 15:49, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm hoping to find the time to overhaul this page and make some significant additions in the next few weeks. It's where I live. Today I just added a mention of the World Cup and cleared up an ambiguity (Sapporo is the 5th biggest city by population, but not area). I think perhaps the Olympics, World Cup and other notable events will at some point need to be split off into a separate section instead of sitting in the introduction. Saiing 14:13, 6 March 2006

Er... 'ward' is the English word for 区 and I guess the cardinal directions north (北), east (東), south (南) and west (西) are quite straightforward, as well as 'center' for 中央. 白石 is 'white stone'. I'd have to look up the rest in a dictionary, but... What point is there to translate the ward names in this article? -- Bakabaka 23:04, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 1972 population, during the Winter Olympics?

There's a claim in the Winter Olympic Games article that Turin and Vancouver were/will be the largest cities to host the games. This claim may be true, but I can't find 1972 population figures of Sapporo and the surrounding areas to support/refute it. For example, Vancouver has a population of approximately 550,000 people and its metro area (including several other similar-sized cities) is 1.9 million. Will this be the largest city to host the winter games? How would Sapporo and its surrounding area have compared in 1972? --Ds13 21:59, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Researching my own question here (but please chime in if you can help)...

* 1970 population: "over 1 million" [1]

* 1983 population: 1,483,182 (same source as above)

The question remains: Should Vancouver be considered larger? Does anyone know what an equivalent surrounding area of Sapporo would include?
