Sapphire is a saturated shade of blue, referring to the gem of the same name. Sapphire gems are most commonly found in a range of blue shades. In modern usage, 'sapphire' refers to a deep vibrant blue; however, early eighteenth century colors called 'sapphire' were a very light pale blue, probably closer to periwinkle.
