Welcome to Wikipedia

Hello, SanitySolipsism. My name is Alex, and on behalf of myself and my fellow Wikipedians, welcome to Wikipedia! This is just a brief greeting that the Wikipedia community uses to greet newly registered users. Wikipedia is one of the world's fastest growing internet sites. We aim to build the biggest and most comprehensive encyclopedia in the world. To date we have over four million articles in a host of languages. The English language Wikipedia alone has over one million articles, but we still need more! Please feel free to contribute your knowledge and expertise to our site.

If you need help see:

Here are a few more good links for newcomers:

We hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and myself or another experienced user will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!

[edit] Re:Assistance

First of all, thanks for contacting me on my talk page. Second of all, yes. There are a few ways you could do this. First, you can simply add {{Wikify|{{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}} to the top of the page, before any other text. This will add the page to the relevant categories that need to be checked. Also, you could leave me another message on my talk page and state which pages you are having problems with, and I could try to help you with the key formatting features. These are probably the best two ways. You can give whichever you like a try. Good luck! Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 12:07, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Perl script for population density

You asked whether you could get the Perl script that was used to compute the population density per square mile. It will take me some time to track that down. I upgraded machines since I did that analysis and the program is on the other machine. If I find it, I'll let you know. — JimIrwin 16:39, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Just a bit of Wiki etiquette: it is generally considered poor etiquette to edit another user's home page. When you want to discuss things or ask questions, you should click the "discussion" tab at the top of the user page and you will be able to add your comments or questions. When you edit discussions, the owners see a "You have new messages" tab whenever they log in. When you edit the home page, there is no such notification. Unnoticed edits to a user's home page could be considered by some to be a form of vandalism.
I moved your questions to the appropriate place on my User talk:JimIrwin page.
Also, in general, I would respond to questions directly on that talk page, rather than replying here your talk page, but since you seem like you might be a new user, you might not watch that page for a response, so I have responded here.
In response to your last question, have you looked at the data lineage page for the population maps? That's about as much information I can provide without actually trying to write a tutorial on how to analyze Census data and create maps. Have you ever looked at the Census data files, and are you prepared to do the programming necessary to make sense of them? If you have, then the information on the data lineage page should be sufficient. If you haven't, then I probably can't help you, since the maps were created by a process that requires some effort and comprehension; it wasn't simply done with an installable piece of software that cranked them out automatically. — JimIrwin 20:22, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
