Talk:Sangam landscape
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two quick points:
1. Since this only covers the akam landscapes, wouldn't it be better named Akam landscapes, thus making room for an article on Puram landscapes? If at some stage we want to write about the symmetry between the akam and puram thinais, that might belong here. 2. Are the translations on this page original? Since we're releasing them under the GFDL, we probably need to ensure either that they are, or that they're out of copyright. Some of them look very much like the ones on penkatali.org -- Arvind 14:30, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

- Not sure about the puram landscape. Can't we cover both in this article?
- The translations are from the reference cited. There were no copyright info on the site. I can write to the website owner asking for specific permission. On the other hand someone coule volunteer to translate. - Parthi 21:35, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
- We can certainly try to cover both in one article, and split it up if it's growing too long. I'll see if I can make a start on the puram thinais this weekend. Writing about it will be a little complicated, because the Tolkappiyam and the Purananuru use very different categories.
- I'd prefer to try and generate our own translations. I've translated kuruntokai 40 for another article here, which we can use to illustrate the "kurinchi" thinai. I could try to generate a few more translations. -- Arvind 22:58, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Expanding the article
I have added some material to the article. I expanded it to also include kaikkilai and perunthinai, because it seemed to me to make sense to discuss all seven akattinais together rather than dividing them on the basis of the five geographical ones and the two non-geographical ones. If you don't agree with this addition, feel free to move it to a place which you think more appropriate. I also added some material from Ilampuranar's commentary on the Tolkappiyam and from Nakkiranar's commentary on the Iraiyanar Akapporul, which I thought fit in with the rest of the article. I hope these changes are OK. Nakkiranar's commentary actually includes a lot more information on things associated with each thinai - birds, names of heroes and heroines, types of settlement, drums, music, etc. Would it would be useful to add that to the table, or do you think it would be too much information? -- Arvind 18:36, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

- Good additions Arvind. It makes me regret my neglect of Tamil during my younger years. - Parthi 02:09, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
