I have edited this page to include elements of its use in both Jewish and Christian traditions, per discussion on the Ner Tamid talk page and set Ner Tamid to direct users to Sanctuary Lamp. Namrevlis 03:42, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Such sanctuary or tabernacle lamps are often red colour, though this is not prescribed by law. This serves to distinguish this light from other votive lights within the church. In the Catholic Church, though red is often used, a white lamp is considered by most liturgists to be more appropriate.

Could this include a citation? "More appropriate" according to whom? Namrevlis 03:21, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

"In a Reform-Jewish congregation, it is often used to symbolize the light released from the shards of the receptacles that God used to create light and goodness." also needs a citation, and some expasion. It doesn't quite make sense as written. Namrevlis 23:13, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
