Talk:San Remigio, Cebu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
San Remegio in Cebu was once a sleepy village of fishing families and farmers with one or two holiday homes for rich local families.Recently however it's popularity has begun to rise and now its beach is obscured by a chain of large plush homes, making access to the sea difficult for the locals. Life in San Remegio is quiet with the main recreation appearing to be standing by at the village crossroads where the general stores, bakeries ,barbequed chicken stalls and liquor stores offer some interest; playing basketball and gathering at the cockpit on a Sunday are also popular. Churchgoing is another focus for the local people. Occasionally a rich foreigner or Balik Bayan will hurtle by in their shiny 4 by 4.Local homes rattle to the blare of expensive karaoke machines as groups of friends belt out their favourite hits. One or two can even sing. San Remegio does feature a recently constructed market however the variety of wares on offer is disappointing. Down by the beach it is possible to find one or two bars with a view of the sea and a number of resorts, some extremely plush and catering for the weekend visitor from the city, have been established eg San Remegio Beach Club and Verdemars. The latter features a Gary Player designed golf course and a dive shop- though when I stopped by it was unmanned and a divemaster had to be called up from Carmen. The beach is of more interest further to the south in Looc where well established mangroves thrive in the shallow bay. The area does not really feature decent scuba diving as it has been overfished and the drop off is pretty deep however off Verdemar a sanctuary has been established and I have heard reports of a turtle being spotted.Sea snakes are commonly encountered even in the shallows. Several foreigners have made San Remegio their home enjoying the quiet, friendly locals and extremely cheap cost of living.Houses are available to rent and there will always be someone to help out with the housework and other duties. Bogo is a small city not far away with all the usual amenities eg cinema, shopping centre, a shabby disco or two ,banks featuring teller machines and even the odd hold up.
