Santo Mazzarino

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Santo Mazzarino (born 1916; died 1987) was a leading historian of ancient Rome of twentieth century.
He has been member of the Accademia dei Lincei.

As a scholar and faculty member of the University of Rome La Sapienza, Mazzarino was viewed as one of Italy's leading historians. His revolutionary book La fine del mondo antico (1959) examined the death of Rome as a result of decadence. This small masterpiece has been very popular among non-specialists too and has been translated into several languages. However, Mazzarino's highest achievements (on IV century AD economy, on classical historiography and on the Roman Empire) have not been translated and his original interpretations and contributions to the study of the ancient world remain yet inaccessible to non Italian readers.

As a Marxist he blamed the same decadence for the woes of the modern world.

At present (2007), his main and fundamental works are being newly issued by Bollati Boringhieri, a renowned Italian scientific publisher in Turin.
