Santa Maria was one of the two middle schools starting out in 1994. There are three grade levels at Santa Maria 6th, 7th, and 8th grade; Santa Maria is made into a campus and there is building for each grade. The uniform are required to be worn dark blue bottoms only, light blue, white, or dark blue tops.

During the fall the sports provided are Boy's and Girl's Soccer, Girl's Volleyball, Cross Country, and Cheer. Winter sports are Boy's Basketball, Girl's Basketball, and Cheer. Spring sports are Track and Field, Cheer, Softball, and Baseball.

Curricular Activities at Santa Maria include Wake Up, Yearbook Committee , National Jr. Honors Society (NJHS), and Student Council. Wake Up is an activity where a group the students of Santa Maria go out and help the community such as the elderly, clearing graffiti, and other activities to help the community. Yearbook Committee is an activity where a group of students work on a yearbook so that their schoolmates can look back on their year at Santa Maria. The yearbook usually includes sports photos from the year, pictures of the students that attended SMMS, etc., etc. National Jr. Honors Society (NJHS) is a program for scholars of SMMS that have excellent grades in all their core classes.
