Santa Margherita di Belice is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily, located about 60 km southwest of Palermo and about 60 km northwest of Agrigento. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 6,647 and an area of 67 square kilometres.[1]
Santa Margherita di Belice borders the following municipalities: Contessa Entellina, Menfi, Montevago, Salaparuta, Sambuca di Sicilia.
In 1968, a massive earthquake devastated the town.[2] A new town was built adjacent to the old town. Many of the damaged structures from the earthquake are still standing, including the ruined palace of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, the Palazzo Filangeri-Cutò. The author immortalized the palace in his novel, The Leopard under the name Donnafugata.
