Santa Cruz Rollergirls LLC (SCRG) [1]is the first all-female player, full-contact, flat-track roller derby league in Santa Cruz,California. SCRG was established in 2007 by women who had a dream to bring the sport and art of roller derby back to Santa Cruz. SCRG is operated by the skaters, for the skaters. Behind the scenes, skaters practice three to four times a week and do off-skates cross-training as well. All members participate in the operation and business of the league.
March of 2008 represents the start of the first season for the league, which will consist of approximately 8 games from Spring to Fall. The SCRG normally holds one bout (game) per month. The home bouts for the league are held at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium in Santa Cruz, California.

[edit] Giving Back to the Community
SCRG proves dedication to their community [2]by joining forces with local organizations to provide volunteer support and help strengthen their bond with the Santa Cruz community. Included in recent activities are: fundraisers for the Santa Cruz Aids Project, and a local women's shelter [3], teen activity center, and various other chartible organizations.
[edit] League Teams
For 2008, the SCRG has three teams, each with their own personality:
- The Lost Girls (with purple and black as colors and a vampire theme)
- Beach Flat Betties (sporting black and pink colors and a tough-chick theme, akin to Rosie the Riveter)
- Fistful of Dollies (sporting red and black colors and a Wild West theme)
The league also has two supporting teams:
- The All-Star Team (traveling team with players from the above three teams)
- The Roll Patrol (referee team)
- Ghostriders (non-skating league membership program -- members assist with running the league, committees, bouts and practices)
[edit] First Season -- 2008
The SCRG league engaged in their first season beginning on March 15th, 2008 with their debut bout against the Silicon Valley Roller Girls at a sold out show in the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Santa Cruz Rollergirls were victorious, garnering a 66 point game over the 56 points for Silicon Valley.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper [4] featured an article about the debut bout on the front page of their Sunday edition on March 16, 2008.
[edit] "Fresh Meat"
SCRG recruits members through tryouts that are held periodically. Those new recruits who pass the tryouts (called "fresh meat") start attending practices and will eventually need to pass a skills test before being placed on a team. While waiting for placement on a team, the "fresh meat" skaters will often be members of the Ghostrider or Roll Patrol teams.
