"Sans logique" is a 1988 song recorded by the French artist Mylène Farmer. Fourth single from her second album Ainsi soit je..., it was released in February 1989.

[edit] Background and writing

After the two successful songs "Sans contrefaçon" and "Pourvu qu'elles soient douces", Farmer decided in February 1989 to release another song, "Sans logique", as fourth single from Ainsi soit je... to make her fans wait until her first tour through France, Belgium and Switzerland that she was preparing.[1] "Dernier Sourire", an unpublished song about the death of a relative, is on the vinyl's b-side.

The song was actually recorded twice, because the first time, there was a technical problem and the scale model made by Laurent Boutonnat was not recorded. Thus, the sentence "this is a blank formatted disket" which can be heard in the introduction of the song refers to this problem and has been maintained to keep the memory of this technical malfunction.[1]

"Sans logique", pretty well broadcast on radio, was one of the ten songs that yielded the most of copyrights to the SACEM in 1989.[2]

Shortly after the single's release, the European Workers Party used a photo from the video, where Farmer has white eyes and the horns on her head, with the subtitle "These artists who promote drugs and the ugliness". Farmer sued the secretary of the party, Jacques Cheminade, accusing him of having used her image without her consent and have made inappropriate and abusive remarks towards her. The Tribunal de Grande Instance of Paris sided with the singer.[1] [3]

The song was only performed at the time of the 1989 tour.

[edit] Lyrics and music

The song deals with a kind of schizophrenia[4] or dissociative identity disorder, which lives in the singer and that makes her a killer. It also refers to religious images (God, Evil).[5] Very literary, the song uses obsolete words from the language of the 18th century. The calculating Marquise de Mertreuil (a character in the French epistolary novel Les Liaisons dangereuses), as angelic as diabolical according to her own interests, seems to be evoked in the lyrics.[6]

[edit] Music video

The video (5:37) was directed by Laurent Boutonnat[7] who has also written the screenplay with Gilles Laurent. It was a Requiem Publishing production, filmed for three days at a studio, in the Île-de-France région (France). It cost about 200,000 euros, because Boutonnat imported two tons of earth and a waxed cloth that was used to represent the sky.

It was inspired by Francisco Goya's painting "El Aquelarre" which portrays a human corrida. It features various people including a torero who also features in "À quoi je sers..."'s video. This video, very gruesome, has been cut by some TV channels, but enabled Farmer to be appreciated by the Gothic public.[8]

In the video, we see some men, women and children, all dressed in black clothes, sit on a bench to watch a human bullfight. It is a cloudy day. Farmer and a man were to embrace on the ground and mix their blood. Then somebody puts iron horns on Farmer's head. The men take off their jackets and behave like toreros. Farmer swoop down on the coats like a raging bull and her lover puts a sword in her back. Her eyes were rolled upwards, she charges the man and kills him. While Farmer and her lover die, everybody goes away, and it starts to rain. The video ends with Farmer crying a tear of blood.[9]

According to the magazine Instant-Mag, "Sans logique" is without a doubt "one of the most beautiful videos of the singer : percussive images, multiple references, many interpretation, rich symbolism". It condenses "the strong themes of the filmmaker Luis Buñuel", particularly the social struggle. Like Goya's painting, the video "tackles the fundamental perversion of men ; reality is described as obsessive and mixes dreams and nightmares". It is "built as an ode to the Spanish forbidden culture, in which mix the themes of childhood and social corruption". "The old characters that form the audience [in the video] represent affluent people, the guarantors of moral order, the partners of moral conformism".[10]

In this video, the singer shows that "she doesn't dating relationships without violence". Because of her pain, Farmer, who was innocent and naive at the beginning of the video, became then corrupted and began to kill.[11] She "kills her lover to not be killed. The horns are a symbol of the bull (power, fertility and virile strength) granted to a woman, but also that of the Devil who takes possession of Farmer. Helpless, she will witness to the lover's agony, overwhelmed and very human".[12] There are also several references to sexuality (the snake in the Garden of Eden, symbolism of the bullfight in the Spanish culture). The themes of love and death are also present in the video.[13]

[edit] Critical reception

France Soir considered that "Sans logique" had "its weight of synthetic sulfur" and that the words had "a preciousness from another era".[14]

[edit] TV et chart performances

Farmer performed "Sans logique" five times in four TV shows in 1989, all on TF1 : Avis de recherche (February 24 and May 12), La Une est à vous (March 11), Jacky show (March 18), Sacrée Soirée (March 22).[15] Farmer, nominated for the Victoires de la musique, has won the title "Best female performer of the year", but refused to sing "Sans logique". For this song, the singer used for the first time a dynamic choreography that she named "the technical of mirror", because she has created it only by looking at herself in a mirror.[2] [16]

In France, the single has been listed for 15 weeks on the French Top 50, from March 18 to July 1, 1989. It debuted at number 30 and reached its peaked position, #10, five weeks after. However, it has managed to maintain for a total of 11 weeks in the Top 20.[17] Its sales have been disappointing in comparison with the two previous singles "Sans contrefaçon" and "Pourvu qu'elles soient douces".

[edit] B-side : "Dernier Sourire"

The vinyl's B-side contains a new song, "Dernier Sourire".

This moving song tackles the theme of the disappearance of a loved one. With simple words, Farmer evokes the passage of the state of living to that of death. This song was maybe composed for Max Gautier, Farmer's father, who died in 1986. In terms of its structure, the song has "a classic accompaniment, a simple melody and no refrain".[19] This song is very sad.[20]

After being chosen instead of "Que mon cœur lâche" to feature on the 1992 album Urgence - 27 artistes pour la recherche contre le SIDA, the song was especially re-recorded in a new version, becoming the anthem of people who come at the end of life.[21]

Farmer performed the song first on November 1, 1989, on TF1, on the French TV show Sacrée Soirée,[22] then during the Mylenium Tour. In 2000, this live version was the second track of the CD single for "Dessine-moi un mouton".

"Dernier Sourire" was covered by Michał Kwiatkowski on a weekly program of Star Academy France, in 2003 (this version was not released as a single).[23]

Studio version 5:18 1988 This version, the longest, ends with the sound of a heart beating more slowly and eventually stopping. In the last verse, Farmer made a grammar mistake in French-language (only in this version), saying "La couteau dans mon plaie", while it should have been said : "Le couteau dans ma plaie".
