SanomaWSOY is the leading media group in the Nordic countries with operations in 20 European countries, based in Helsinki. The group is also among the top five European magazine publishers and has a strong position, in addition to its native Finland, in Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Ukraine.
The group has an annual turnover of 2,926 million euros[2] (2007) and employs an average of 19,587 people. SanomaWSOY was formed in 1999 with the merger of Sanoma Corporation, WSOY (Werner Söderström Osakeyhtiö; Werner Söderström Corporation) and Helsinki Media Company.
SanomaWSOY consists of five divisions:[3]
- Sanoma Magazines Magazine publishing and online operations
- Sanoma Newspaper publishing, online operations and printing
- SanomaWSOY Education and Books Educational publishing, publishing, and business information and services
- SWelcom TV, broadband internet, and radio
- Rautakirja Kiosk operations, press distribution, bookstores and entertainment
SanomaWSOY's stock is listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. Its biggest owners include Aatos Erkko and other members of the Erkko family. The newspaper Helsingin Sanomat that was founded in 1889 as Päivälehti is one of the single most significant products of the group.
The group will revert back to the name Sanoma Corporation as of October 2008.[4]
In April 2008, the group acquired the leading Bulgarian internet company.[5]
