Sankuru Province is to become a province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo upon the relevant article of the 2006 Constitution becoming effective in 2009. Its capital will be Lodja.
The major geographical feature of this area is the Sankuru River.

In 1962, during the height of the first Crisis, Sankuru was created from the former Kasai province. It was incorporated into Kasai-Oriental in 1966 under the Mobutu government.
