[edit] Musical training
Sanjay began learning music at the age of seven. Initial training was under V. Lakshminarayana on the violin as well as in vocal music. He later switched to vocal music and was trained by Rukmini Rajagopalan for a period of almost eight years. His skills were further sharpened under Calcutta K.S Krishnamurthy and the training under him led to innovations and blending of tradition and modernity. Sanjay continues to learn from Nadaswaram maestro Semponarkoil SRD Vaidyanathan. His music is influenced greatly by the singer, G. N. Balasubramaniam (GNB). In a recent interview (December 2006) on Jaya TV he also mentioned that his style has characteristics of musicians like Madurai Mani Iyer and M.D.Ramanathan.
[edit] Accolades
According to many critics, Sanjay's music is sparkling, imaginative and flamboyant. In the words of SVK, the renowned critic who writes for The Hindu newspaper, "His greatest asset is the azhutham (intense and forceful enunciation) in his music". In the words of NMN, another respected critic of The Hindu newspaper, "Sanjay Subrahmanyan is talented and has the flexible tone to express his musical intentions. They are unassailable. Conceptually, his vision is clear and balanced. Naturally, he does not misuse his voice, but directs it to explore the rich ground of classicism. And he does it with both imagination and responsibility".
