Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) is a premier medical institute of India located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

SGPGIMS is both an educational institute that imparts postgraduate medical training and a working hospital that provides inexpensive medical care to a large number of patients. It is a tertiary care referral hospital that caters to patients referred from not only the nearby villages and towns but also to patients referred for advanced medical care from King George Medical College Lucknow, distant areas like Patna (Bihar), Rewa (Madhya Pradesh), and even Nepal.

The Institute has the following departments: Clinical: Hematology, Immunology, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Gastrosurgery, Gastroenterology, Cardiothoracic surgery, Cardiology, Urology, Nephrology, Endosurgery, Endocrinology, Medical Genetics, and Radiotherapy. Paraclinical: Nuclear Medicine,Pathology, Microbiology, and Radiology. The institute has a statistics department as well as a Telemedicine Unit which the institute has invested in recently.

There is a significant contribution to clinical and basic science research by the faculty and residents of the Institute.

A very significant setback for the Institute's progress have been a series of ambitious and politically influenced Directors who have not been able to take the institute to the level of national and international acclaim that it deserves for its contribution to the field of research in medical science. The current director is Dr Mahapatra who is known for his antics and eccentricities, switching off lights to save electricity while patients suffer in dark, hapless from failed intubations and iv access; thus deteriorating the work environment and perverting the 'patient-first' ethic.

Unlike the american system which by default allows the good (not necessarily the most senior or most popular) to prosper and the corrupt to stick out like a sore thumb and be evicted from the system, thus preventing further hampering of progress, Indian institutions still suffer from the malady of 'old is gold' thus forcing the young efficient physicians to seek success elsewhere even if it means leaving the country.

The institute runs not only D.M (Doctorate of Medicine), Mch(Doctorate of surgery), and M.D(Doctor of Medicine) programs, training residents in various surgical and medical superspecialty and specialty fields but it also runs PhD programs for basic science research in such varied subjects as Neurochemistry, and Neurophysiology.

The institute is named after Sanjay Gandhi, a prominent Indian National Congress politician and son of Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.

Apart from all this, SGPGIMS is an extremely beautiful campus. It has flourishing green trees and parks, a huge swimming pool and a very well equipped gymnasium. However, the best of all is the brilliant Sports Complex that boasts of badminton, table tennis, basketball and tennis courts. Houses of doctors are big and spacious, with pretty gardens and verandahs. SGPGIMS is considered to be a very safe and comfortable place to reside in.
