The Sanford Heart & Chevron

Sanford USD Medical Center is a hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA. It is operated by Sanford Health.

With nearly 500 beds, Sanford University of South Dakota Medical Center is the largest tertiary hospital in South Dakota, serving as the primary teaching institution for the Sanford School of Medicine University of South Dakota. Employing nearly 4,500 staff, Sanford USD Medical Center is the largest employer in Sioux Falls. As a full service community-owned hospital, Sanford provides a full complement of medical and surgical care, both inpatient and outpatient, in all specialties with Centers of Excellence for:

As part of an integrated health care system, Sanford USD Medical Center serves as a regional medical center with half of its patients coming from outside the immediate Sioux Falls community. Tertiary level specialty services connect Sanford USD Medical Center with other health care facilities and physicians in communities throughout the region.

As a community-owned health care organization, Sanford USD Medical Center plays a leadership role in the development of new health services for the community. This year marked the opening of the new Surgical Tower. This $55 million dollar facility provides state-of-the-art surgical services plus houses the new Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the first phase of Sanford Children’s Hospital. Through a partnership with the YMCA, Sanford also opened Family Wellness in 2006. This 70,000-square-foot (6,500 m²) facility combines the best in fitness and family centered programming.

Sanford USD Medical Center continues to offer the best value in health care At the same time, Sanford’s ability to deliver patient friendly services is a great value to both patients and their families. In 2006, Sanford introduced the PATIENTVIEW system. This system allows for increased education, comfort, and nursing efficiencies while providing patients with more television channels, free movies, games and soothing music.

A benchmark at Sanford Health, the culture of Service Excellence reflects an environment of service and caring among the staff and physicians. This way of life sets the standard for providing compassionate, comforting and memorable experiences for our patients and families who put their trust in the staff at Sanford. As a result of those efforts, Sanford USD Medical Center has been awarded Magnet status for Nursing Excellence, earned the Distinguished Hospital Award from J.D. Power and Associates for the third year in a row, received the Sioux Falls Business of the Year award, named Top 100 Hospitals by Solucient, and most recently the U.S.News & World Report recognized Sanford Health as “One of America’s Best Hospitals” in three different specialties.

Sanford USD Medical Center is consistently named as one of the nation’s best. Solucient named Sanford as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals. U.S.News & World Report listed Sanford among the top 50 hospitals in three specialty areas: Endocrinology, Gynecology, and Urology. And J.D. Power and Associates recognized Sanford Health for a third consecutive year for service excellence as a Distinguished Hospital.

Of the 5,189 hospitals evaluated for U.S.News & World Report, only 176 hospitals scored high enough to be ranked in any specialty. In other words, only 3.4% of the hospitals initially screened made this list of “America’s Best Hospitals.” As a Solucient Top 100 Hospital, Sanford was recognized for its excellence in quality of care, operational efficiency, financial performance and adaptation to the environment. This is the fifth time Sanford Health has been recognized with this honor.

J.D. Power & Associates Distinguished Hospital Program acknowledges Sanford's strong commitment to providing its patients with an outstanding inpatient experience. In the study, Sanford Health notably exceeded the national benchmark study score for overall inpatient satisfaction. Additionally, a majority of Sanford patients indicated they had more or much more trust and confidence in the hospital after their most recent stay.
