Sanford Health is a non-profit, integrated health care delivery system composed of hospitals, clinics, long term care, managed care, licensed practitioners, a health plan, a foundation, a clinical research center and seven basic research centers. The organization based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota but its geographical reach covers over 60,000 square miles in South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa. Previously known as Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health System, the system announced on February 3, 2007, its name change to Sanford Health to commemorate a $400 million gift from businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford.

The system includes over 350 physicians at over 150 facilities across South Dakota and the surrounding states. Sanford Health's organizational structure consists of two compartments: the Health Services compartment, which includes all areas of patient care operations; and the Development and Research compartment, which includes all non-patient care activities. The system is presently composed of five divisions: Sanford USD Medical Center, the region's largest tertiary medical center and the system's flagship medical center; Sanford Clinic, a multi-specialty group of over 350 physicians; Sanford Health Plan, a non-traditional, non-gatekeeper HMO and the second largest health care payer in South Dakota; Sanford Health Foundation, the system's fundraising arm; and Sanford Health Network, which includes all regional hospitals, clinics, long-term care and congregate facilities, assisted-living facilities, home health providers, and home medical equipment entities in the states of SD, MN, IA, and NE.

Sanford USD Medical Center, formerly known as Sioux Valley Hospital USD Medical Center, and prior to that as Sioux Falls Hospital and Sioux Falls Lutheran Hospital, opened its doors in 1893 and provides health care to the Sioux Falls metropolitan area and surrounding region. Sanford Health is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and had the first CAAMS (Commission on Accreditation of Air Medical Services) accredited flight program in the state of South Dakota.

Sanford USD Medical Center is the recipient of several industry honors, including the Solucient Top 100 Hospital distinction and the J.D. Power and Associates "Distinguished Hospital" distinction, Magnet Status for Nursing Excellence, and "One of America's Best" by U.S. News and World Report. In 2005 a $15 million gift to Mayo Clinic and endowed a collaboration between the pediatric specialists of Mayo Clinic and Sanford Children's Hospital at Sanford USD Medical Center.
