Sandy Bay Resort, Haad Yao, Thailand
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sandy Bay is a quiet resort in Northwestern Ko Pha Ngan - an island in the southern Gulf of Thailand. It is a small horse shoe shaped bay with beautiful sand and waters. It was virtually unheard of by mainstream tourists up until recently. The new popularity of the area is evidenced by new construction and more bars than ever before.
The resort is run by a friendly Thai family. They own many bungalows on this strip of beach and also a restaurant, mopeds for rent and a jeep which can serve as a taxi.
A typical bungalow costs about €15 a night. For this amount you should expect air conditioning, and a fan.
There is not a lot to do on the beach itself but typical activities would include driving around the island on a rented moped, sunbathing, watching television in the restaurant, lying in hammocks etc.
Popular bars in this area include Jacks Bar, the Eagle Bar and the Magic Bar.
Most bars sell marijuana and weak doses of magic mushrooms. Hard drugs are not readily available on this beach and should be avoided in Thailand anyway.
The resort is about a 20 minute drive from Tong Sala - the main town on Phag Nan. Ferries go from Ko Samui to 2 different ports on Phag Nan - so in order to facilitate travel to Sandy Bay, the ferry to Tong Sala should be used. Taxis and Tuk Tuks are easily available once a ferry pulls into Tong Sala.
The weather is normally perfect in this area with isolated storms. The electricity is reliable but may go in the event of a strong storm.
