Sandwich Bay

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sandwich Bay is a long sweeping inlet of the sea between Ramsgate and Deal, Kent, England. The coastal area consists of sand flats with their associated salt marshes and coastal sand dunes. The Sandwich Flats stretch for about five miles (8km) along the coast. The dune systems here are particularly representative of their type [1].

The Bay gives its name to various nature conservation organisations: the Sandwich and Hacklinge Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) being one. That SSSI is also home to the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust [2] and the Monk's Wall nature reserve. The Southern Emerald damselfly was found here in 2003, only the second site in Great Britain|Britain at which it had occurred (Forrest 2005).
