Sandsøya

Sandsøya is an island in Bjarkøy municipality in Troms. The island lies east of Grytøya and southeast of Bjarkøya, and has an area of 10.8 km². The highest point on the island is Veten at 212 metres above sea level. In 2001, Sandsøya had 2001 107 inhabitants.
There is a ferry line between Altevik on Sandsøya and Fenes on Grytøya, and Austnes on Bjarkøya. Bjarkøy municipality has planned to join Sandsøya and Bjarkøya to Grytøya with a series of underwater road [tunnel]]s. This plan was not in the priority of Troms council's Norsk transportplan in April 2005.
There is also a connection by hurtigbåt from Sandsøya to Harstad, Austnes and Senja. (Route times: [1])
With the municipal elections of 2005, Jorunn Berg from Sandsøya was elected mayor of Bjarkøy. He represents Sandsøy og Fenes/Skjellesvik Bygdeliste, also called Sandsøylista. [2]
