Sandilyan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sandilyan (Tamil: சாண்டில்யன்) is a Tamil author recognised for influencing Tamil literature to a degree comparable to Kalki Krishnamurthy[citation needed].

He is known for his historical romance and adventure novels, often set in the times of the Chola empire and involving political intrigue between various nations along the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea trade routes. For example, Yavana Rani (The Greek Queen) involves a Greek princess who is saved by a Tamil Chola noble, and Kadal Pura (Ocean Dove) tells the story of a commander in the army of King Rajendra II who rescues a Sumatran princess.

Sandilyan's most famous novels were published in Kumudam, a weekly Tamil magazine and was instrumental in increasing the circulation to a greater extent. He was one of the very few Tamil writers to get a monthly salary from Kumudam for his novels. After leaving Kumudam, he unsuccessfully ran a weekly magazine himself by name Kamalam.
