The Afan Lido was opened by the Queen in 1970.[1] The facility formerly included a 50m competition swimming pool, which was later converted into a 25m leisure pool with water slides. The Lido also has a spa, gym, and concert hall where famous bands have played, including in recent years McFly, All Saints, Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers and Lost Prophets.

[edit] Education

Sandfields Comprehensive Sandfields Comprehensive School is located within the Sandfields area and is one of the fastest-improving comprehensive schools in the UK.[citation needed] It has produced a number of sportsmen and women who have represented Wales at international level, e.g. Les Keen ex-Aberavon RFC and Wales and Laura May Walkely who recently signed to Arsenal Ladies Football Team.

There are also many primary schools located within Sandfields Estate such as Tir Morfa, Tywyn, Traeth Melyn and Glan Y Mor. Like Sandfields Comprehensive, Glan Y Mor has also suffered in the past with a bad reputation possibly due to its location in the most underprivileged area of Sandfields, however it has improved greatly in the recent past.[citation needed]

[edit] Government

The area encompasses the electoral wards of Sandfields West and Sandfields East, part of the Neath Port Talbot unitary authority.
