[edit] Getting there

Sandakphu is accessible either by a 10 hour trek or by battered 4X4 Landrovers (approx 4 hours) from Maneybhanjan. The 31 km road is extremely steep, rocky and needs experienced drivers specifically while passing other vehicles on narrow sections. The road ventures in and out of Nepal at sections without border checks.

Maneybhanjan itself is a small town 1 hour drive away from Darjeeling or 3 hours from nearest Airport at Bagdogra. Foreigners need to hire services of a guide and/or porter while entering the Singalila National Park for treks.

Visit pass: All Indians have free access to the region while foreigners need to register on arrival either at Siliguri or at Bagdogra airport. The entry fee to the national park range from Rs 25 to Rs 100</nowiki>

[edit] Political situation and safety:

Typically the region leaves tourists alone, as tourism is the main source of revenue for common people but do expect to get caught up in a two/three days long general strike now and then. The dominant party in the region (DGHC) has been losing power recently to Gorkha Janamukti Morcha and that has led to more tensions in the area. However, once you start your trek from Maneybhanjan chances are you will not be disturbed. The people are usually honest and willing to lend you hand when in need.

[edit] Climate & Temperature:

Apparently the temperature swings from -20 C (including wind chill factor)in winter to +15C in summer. Sandakphu gets snowfall in late december to early february. When that happens the trekkers have to wait for locals to descend and follow their foot steps -literally (or hire a pony)

[edit] Health:

Nearest hospital is in Darjeeling, so tourists need be aware of effects of Altitude sickness (AMS) and carry emergency medicine.
