In June 2007, San Marino RTV, the Sammarinese broadcaster, indicated interest in joining the contest in the near future, all depending on the interest of the stockholders, especially RAI, which withdrew from the contest in 1997. Five months later, the broadcaster confirmed their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade.[1]

Until 2008, San Marino, alongside with Liechtenstein and Vatican City had been the only sovereign nations of Europe that had not yet competed at the Eurovision Song Contest. Kazakhstan is the only Transcontinental countries in the borders of Europe and Asia that has not participated yet, as Azerbaijan debuted in the 2008 contest as well.

San Marino holds the honour of being the 50th country to participate at Eurovision.

The first entry, Complice by Miodio, didn't progress to the final. The winner of this edition, Dima Bilan, ended his "Winner's Tour" in San Marino.

San Marino RTV, which broadcast the full event, will decide later this year whether San Marino will participate in Eurovision 2009[2], but some singer are ready to represent the small republic.
