San Marcos is a municipality in the Carazo department of Nicaragua. In this department was born Anastasio Somoza Garcia, one of the successors of the Somoza's dynasty. His house, located in the country side of the city, is a historic site. San Marcos has a population around 30,600 habitants. It is located at 45 km south from the capital, Managua. San Marcos has a wonderful weather that enable the production of coffee and a large variety of tropical flowers and fruits. San Marcos' habitants are a Catholic majority, a heritage of the Spaniard Colonization. They are fervent followers of the Spaniard Catholic Traditions. For example, the most notorious festivity, where many people gather every year, is the celebration of their Patron San Marcos. San Marcos' Catholic Parish Church is a legacy of the Spaniard influence, as could be seen in its construction and designs. San Marcos has become the host of the Catholic Campus of Ave Maria University. This is the only American University in Nicaragua, which reclutes students from all over Central America and the United States.

The Ave Maria University occupies the building where the famous Normal de SeƱoritas Salvadora de Somoza was located. An institution that will prepare young girls to become elementary school teachers. This institution was the host of students from all over the country and Central America.
San Marcos has become a larger community over the years. Hosting the Ave Maria University has given San Marcos a new dimension, a new image: San Marchos has become a University City. This change has been very positive, as new job opportunities have opened, more visitors come to the city, more attention needs to be given to keep the city well maintained. The young people are witnessing the importance of getting an education. Many have succeeded in their careers, and many are motivated to continue.
San Marcos a city of tradition and new trends. San Marcos has successfully merged its tradition with the new era, and the new opportunities that only education brings to its doors.
