San Gerardo de Rivas is the 'base camp' for hikers and climbers wishing to reach the peak of Cerro ChirripĆ³ - highest mountain in Costa Rica and second highest in Central America. The village is perched high up in the valley amongst the Talamanca Mountains and offers wonderful hikes in addition to the challenging climb up Chirripo.

San Gerardo, traditionally an agricultural region, is changing to embrace eco-tourism and new opportunities for diverse economic opportunities for locals and newcomers alike.
