San Francisco Sex Information is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides free, accurate, non-judgmental sex information via the World Wide Web, email, telephone, and training programs. Founded in 1972, the graduates of its training program include some of the best known writers, entrepreneurs, and advice columnists in the sex industry, including Isadora Alman, Joani Blank, Dossie Easton, Susie Bright, Patrick Califia, Sybil Holiday, Andrea Nemerson, and Carol Queen, as well as other figures in the sex industry such as Fetish Diva Midori and Tantric Healer Triambika. The organization answers about 3000 phone calls and about twice as many emails every year. Since its inception, SFSI's Basic Sex Educator training program has graduated over 1500 trainees, and is considered unique in its presentation of human sexuality in a purely descriptive and non-judgmental manner, as opposed to the more common proscriptive and prescriptive approach.
Mission statement: San Francisco Sex Information (SFSI) is an organization dedicated to providing accurate, non-judgmental education and information about all aspects of human sexuality. We are completely staffed and run by volunteers, and have been an important resource for individuals and families as well as professionals in education, mental health, and medical health since our inception in 1972.
SFSI's mission is two-fold: a free switchboard provides a first-contact point for individuals and professionals looking for accurate, up-to-date information relating to all aspects of human sexuality, information that is free from hidden agendas or judgments. We have also developed a well-respected, intensive sex-educator training program, which all of our volunteers are required to complete before being considered for positions on our switchboard. Trainees are not limited to switchboard volunteers, however. Other SFSI sex-educator trainees have included well-known authors in the field of human sexuality and sexual health, students and professionals in mental and medical health services, and other educators.
