San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing (also known as San Francisco Rush and Rush) is an arcade racing game set in San Francisco, California, developed by Atari Games. It is first game in the Rush series. An expanded version, known as San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition was later released, which featured an extra track based in Alcatraz. Midway Games also developed a console version for the Nintendo 64 that combines the original arcade version and The Rock version; Midway also released a PlayStation version but it didn't include the bonus tracks from the Alcatraz upgrade [1].
The PlayStation port is sometimes criticized for its different style of graphics, snow effects, UFO's (via a cheat), an "Explosive mode", and other things that were never in the arcade versions.
San Francisco Rush The Rock (along with San Francisco Rush 2049) was included in the 2005 arcade game compilation Midway Arcade Treasures 3 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube.
[edit] Features
The game is notable because of the high level of detail that went into recreating the city of San Francisco and the fast arcade-style physics and exaggeration of gravity. The game also features a two-player mode and rumble pack support. Hidden shortcuts and jumps add to the replay value of the game. There are also keys to be found which can unlock extra vehicles.
[edit] Game modes
There are six tracks in the game, with mirror and reverse options to make a total of 24 variants to race on. Modes include death race, circuit, time trial and race. In the N64 version, once the circuit mode has been beaten and a special code is entered, a seventh track, Alcatraz, is unlocked.
