San Francisco Mechanics' Institute

The Mechanics' Institute is a library and chess room located at 57 Post Street in San Francisco, California. Established in 1855 at the conclusion of the California Gold Rush, it contributed to the establishment of the University of California, Berkeley.
There are several other Mechanics' Institutes around the world, especially in Australia. They were originally established as libraries and educational institutions for adults in the working class.
The current director of the Chess room is John W. Donaldson.
