San Cristóbal a is a municipality (municipio) and the capital of the San Cristóbal province in the Dominican Republic. Within the municipality there is one municipal district (distrito municipal): Hato Damas.[1]

San Cristóbal was founded in the late 16th century. The first Dominican constitution was signed here in 1844. Rafael Trujillo, dictator from 1930 to 1961, was born here in 1891. Trujillo built many monuments in San Cristóbal, such as La Toma, to honor himself.

San Cristobal Is located about 30 km on the DR-2 from Santo Domingo and close to Bajos de Haina. It's Located near the coast of the Caribbean Sea. The topography is hilly as you go farther inland into the Cordillera Central mountain range.

As of the 2002 census the municipality had 220,767 inhabitants, 137,422 living in the city itself and 83,345 in its rural districts (Secciones). [2] For comparison with other municipalities and municipal districts see the list of municipalities and municipal districts of the Dominican Republic.
