San Carlos is a city located in the department of Maldonado, 15 Km. to the North of the capital city, Maldonado. Its population, as of 2004, is 24,771.
It was founded in 1763 by the Spanish Governor Pedro Antonio de Cevallos, to discourage the foundation of Portuguese settlements in the region. Its name is originated from that of the King of Spain at the time, Carlos III.
It is considered to be the agropecuarian centre of the region.
